Box Score Mansfield, Pa. - Chris Murphy tied the Millersville single-season school record for wins with his fifth complete game shutout Sunday in a 2-0 triumph over Mansfield in game one. The Mountaineers helped Coach Harry Hillson get his 800th career victory by nipping the No. 20 Marauders 3-2 in the nightcap.
Millersville (29-12, 12-4 PSAC East) split the four-game series with Mansfield (18-21, 4-12 PSAC East). Runs were at a premium in both games, and Millersville managed just four total on the day.
Murphy allowed only three hits and two walks while striking out seven to improve to 10-1 on the season. He has allowed only two runs over his last 40.2 innings of work and has surrendered no more than five hits in any of his six starts. His 10th win matches the record set by
Brooks Rothschild (2011) and Timm Bromirski (1998). Both Rothschild and Bromirski pitched for teams that reached the NCAA Championship.
Already with a no-hitter and perfect game to his credit this season, Murphy was perfect through four on Sunday. There was little margin for error as the score stood tied at 0-0 until
Mike Lebo followed
Tyler McDonald's double with a RBI single.
Mansfield loaded the bases in the fifth, but Murphy forced the lead runner at the plate after a come-backer and then recorded the third out via strikeout.
Kurt Seiders added an insurance run in the seventh, and Murphy sat the Mounties down in order in the bottom of the inning.
Millersville managed only five hits in the game two loss.
Jim McDade provided one of his best starts o the season, allowing one unearned run on two hits over 4.1 innings. His effort went for naught, though, as the bullpen couldn't hold Millersville's early 2-0 lead.
Jeremy Musser led off the fourth with a homer and McDonald recorded an RBI single in the fifth. Mansfield picked up a run in the fifth on a Seth Tressler RBI groundout, and they tied the game in the sixth following a throwing error and a wild pitch.
Neither team scored in the seventh, sending the game into extra innings. The Marauders put two on with two outs in the eighth but couldn't push home a run.
Adam Zipko (0-2) sat down the first two batters of the bottom of the inning, but Anthony Renz kept the Mounties alive with a single, Matt Fisher doubled to left center to push home the game-winning run.
Zipko worked 2.2 innings in the loss. Jeremy Mapstone (1-2) earned the win for Mansfield after pitching just a third of a inning.
Millersville now stands deadlocked for first place in the PSAC East with Kutztown. West Chester and East Stroudsburg--Millersville's next two league opponents--are close behind.
The Marauders step out of conference play to host Chestnut Hill for a nine inning game Tuesday at Cooper Park.
