Barton K's 10 in Split with Mansfield

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Millersville, Pa. - Right-handed pitcher Tad Barton struck out a season-high 10 batters in a 6-1 victory over Mansfield in game two of a PSAC East doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The Marauders dropped the first game of the series to the Mountaineers by a score of 9-5.

Before Saturday's games Millersville unveiled the name change of Marauder Park. The Marauders now call home "Cooper Park" in honor of alum Bennett J. Cooper. A ceremony was held prior to the doubleheader to recognize Cooper and his contributions to the baseball program.

Millersville (28-11, 11-3 PSAC East) jumped out to an early 4-1 lead in game two by scoring three runs in the bottom of the second inning. After a walk by Mark Stuckey, a single by David Pine, and a wild pitch, the Marauders had runners on second and third with only one out. Tyler Orris hit a triple to right field to plate two runs. Evan King followed by singling to the left side to score Orris from third.

That was all that Barton (6-2) needed as he pitched six straight scoreless innings to end the game. Barton gave up just four hits and was one strike out away from tying his career high in the complete game victory. The junior is now a perfect 4-0 against the PSAC East and has now accumulated three wins over the Mountaineers during his time as a Marauder.

The Black and Gold tallied two more runs in the bottom of the sixth on a sacrifice bunt by Pine to score Stuckey from third and a single right over the third base bag by King to score McDonald.

Mansfield (17-20, 3-11 PSAC East) received 5.2 innings from starting pitcher Joel Worthington (0-2), who gave up eight hits and six runs while striking out six batters. Dylan Woodworth knocked in the only run of the game for Mansfield in the first inning to record his third RBI of the day.

In the first game of the doubleheader, Millersville junior Tim Mayza (8-2) struggled, allowing three earned runs on five hits and five walks over 4.2 innings of work. The left-hander did record six strikeouts in the game and has now totaled five or more strikeouts in nine of his 11 starts this year.

Mansfield starting pitcher Joe Candelmo (4-2) pitched all seven innings and gave up four earned runs and one walk. Despite allowing 14 hits, Candelmo only gave up three extra base hits to the Marauders. Woodworth went 3-for-4 for Mansfield with two RBIs.

Jeff Heisey helped the Marauders score the first two runs of the series against Mansfield. Heisey doubled, stole third and then beat out a throw at the plate on a sacrifice fly by Zach Stone in the second inning to score the first run of game one. He then used a bunt single in a base-loaded, two out scenario to give the home team a 2-0 advantage in the third.

A trio of three-run innings by the Mountaineers in the fourth, sixth, and seventh innings gave Mansfield a 9-2 lead heading into the bottom half of the seventh.

Mark Stuckey belted a two-run shot to left field for his third homer of the year to pull Millersville within four runs in the final inning. The comeback fell short as McDonald flied out to left field to end the game with the score 9-5.

The nine runs given up by the Marauders was the most by the Black and Gold in home game this season and marks only the third time in the past three years that they have given up nine runs to an opponent at home.

Millersville travels to Mansfield tomorrow to complete the final two games of the four-game series. The Marauders then host non-conference opponent Chestnut Hill on Tuesday, April 23 at 3 p.m.
