Indiana, Pa. - It is crunch time for the Millersville men's golf team, and performance at this week's IUP Invitational was critical to the Marauders' chance for earning a NCAA Atlantic/East Super Regional bid. After struggling in the first round, the Marauders rallied to finish tied for sixth in a field of 15.
Millersville was ninth in the latest regional ranking, just one spot ahead of West Liberty. The Marauders posted a disappointing 313 total in the first round, and West Liberty trailed the Marauders by only a stroke. Millersville and West Liberty went in opposite directions on Monday.
The Marauders, led by Robert Coyne's 1-under-par 71, posted the fourth-best team score of the day at 301 to jump into a tie for sixth with Goldey-Beacom. West Liberty slipped to 12th with a second round team score of 319. Millersville also finished ahead of West Chester and Gannon, both of which were ranked in the region's top 10 last week.
Coyne improved upon his day one score by eight shots to finish in a tie for 16th. Conor Gilbert shot rounds of 78 and 76 to place in a tie for 26th. Rob Rowe bounced back from a first round 80 to shoot 75 in the second, which placed him 32nd. He tied with teammate Mat Lutz, who shot a team-best 76 in the opening round.
California (Pa.) captured the team crown with a strong 287 in the second round, which was 10 shots better than any other team on the day. Indiana (Pa.) and Davis & Elkins tied for second.
Millersville can go a long way toward solidifying a regional berth at next week's California Invitational.
