Box Score 2 Millersville, Pa. - Behind the arm of
Tim Mayza and a lineup that totaled 12 hits, Millersville topped Philadelphia University 7-1 in game one of Saturday's doubleheader at Marauder Park. Philadelphia's game two starter Casey O'Donnell did his best Mayza impersonaton and helped his team salvage a split by a 5-3 score.
Mayza (4-0) recorded his fourth win in five starts by surrendering just three hits and no walks while striking out eight in a complete game effort. Only five Rams reached base, and the only run he surrendered was unearned.
Dan Johnson led the Marauders at the plate with three hits.
David Pine drove in two and six different Marauders recorded a RBI. Millersville scored early and often, striking for two runs in the first inning on a
Zach Stone RBI single and a
Jeff Heisey sacrifice fly. Millersville added two more in the third on a RBI single from
Tyler McDonald and a RBI ground out from Pine.
While the Marauders built the early lead, Mayza sat down the first 10 batters he faced, striking out six. The Rams picked up one run in fourth. Hunter Greenwood singled to break up the perfect game, advanced to second on an error, moved to third on a wild pitch and scooted home on a ground out.
Millersville tacked on three more in the fifth with run scoring hits from
Mark Stuckey, Pine and
Evan King.
Mayza lowered his ERA to 0.86 through 31.1 innings and has struck out 29 compared to just six walks.
O'Donnell (2-1) gave up a run in the bottom of the the first when Johnson drove in King with a single. O'Donnell recovered, however, and retired 18 of the next 20 Millersville batters between the third and the sixth.
Marauder starter
Chris Murphy (4-1) was unbeaten in four starts entering the game, but a Ryan Shellock two-run bomb in the sixth and two more runs in the seventh put the Marauders behind, 5-1.
O'Donnell retired the first two batters of the seventh before running into trouble. King singled and
Kurt Seiders and Stone drew walks to load the bases. O'Donnell handed the ball to Cory Dean, who was immediately tagged by Johnson for a two-run single up the middle. Dean then faced Heisey with the tying run on first base, but Dean escaped by getting Heisey to fly out to center.
Millersville has scored fewer than four runs only three times this season, and the seven hits in game two matched a season low. It was also just the second time that Millersville failed to steal at least two bases.
Stone kept his hit streak alive and extended it to a 13 games, matching a career-best.
Tyler Orris extended his streak to eight and has now reached base in all 14 games of his Marauder career.
Millersville now stands at 10-4 while Philadelphia moved to 2-5-1. The Marauders and Rams meet Sunday in Philadelphia for one nine-inning affair.
