Box Score 2 Millersville, Pa. - Millersville erupted for 13 runs and received a complete game shutout from
Chris Murphy in a 13-0 win over Indiana (Pa.) in game one of Saturday's doubleheader. The Crimson Hawks exacted some revenge in the nightcap, though, scoring two late runs to top the Marauders, 2-1.
IUP (11-8) took three of four in the series to drop Millersville's record to 14-8. Aside from the offensive outburst in game three of the series, the Marauders managed just two runs in the other three games.
Murphy (6-1), the reigning NCBWA Division II Pitcher of the Week, extended his consecutive scoreless innings streak to 14.0 and pushed his hitless innings streak to 11.1 until Austin Mock singled in the bottom of the fifth. He still managed to throw his second consecutive complete game shutout and surrendered just four hits and three walks while fanning five.
The Marauder offense took the pressure off of Murphy by putting up five runs in the top of the first and bouncing Demetrius Christofes from the game before he retired even two batters. IUP was forced to use four pitches and each of the game gave up at least two runs.
Zach Stone, whose hit streak of 17 games was snapped on Friday, returned to form by going 3-for-4 with four RBIs and three runs. Each of the first four batters in Millersville's lineup scored at least two runs.
Jeff Heisey and
Tyler McDonald both drove in three runs. Eight of nine batters in the starting lineup contributed to the team's total of 16 hits.
Jim McDade (1-3) gave the Marauders a solid start in game two but didn't get the help that Murphy did. Millersville struck first, scoring a run on a Heisey RBI single in the first but managed just two hits the rest of the way against IUP starter Kyle Zaorski (1-0). Zaorski entered with 14 strikeouts in seven appearances but struck out 12 Marauders in his complete game effort.
McDade held the Crimson Hawks scoreless until the the fifth, when Mock led off with double down the left field line. Rick Jones singled, putting runners on the corners. Jordan DeLuca drove in the tying run with a sacrifice fly. McDade escaped the jam without further damage, though.
IUP struck again in the sixth. Ryan Uhl led off with a single to center, and that bounced McDade from the game.
Adam Zipko entered and after Aaron Lupia sacrifice Uhl into scoring position, Tyler Forster singled, moving Uhl to third. Jordan Giannini gave the Crimson Hawks a 2-1 lead on a single to left field. Zipko walked the next batter, loading the bases, but he struck out the next two to keep Millersville within a run. The Marauders, however, went down in order in the seventh.
Millersville faces another tough test on Tuesday when Wilmington visits Marauder Park on Tuesday for a nine-inning game at 3 p.m.
