Millersville, Pa. - Indiana's (Pa.) Stephen Cooke and Kyle Zambanini shut down the Millersville lineup in both games of Friday's doubleheader at Marauder Park. Millersville mustered only four hits in both games and dropped the twinbill by scores of 1-0 and 5-1.
Tim Mayza (5-1) was a tough-luck loser in game one. He threw 6.2 innings and struck out eight, but Robbie Zinsmeister singled in the game-winning run in the top of the seventh to lift IUP (10-6) to the victory. Jordan DeLuca scored the game-winning run after pinch running for Tyler Mroz, who singled to lead off the inning. DeLuca moved up to second on a wild pitch, and with two outs, Zinsmeister delivered.
While Cooke (4-1) struck out eight and surrendered only four hits, Millersville had its chances. The Marauders stranded two in the first inning, and in the second, Jeremy Musser and Tyler McDonald led off with back-to-back singles. Cooke, however thwarted the rally by fielding a bunt and sniping the lead runner at third base for the first out. He then retired the side to escape.
Cooke faced just 12 batters over the next four innings. In the seventh, Jeff Heisey led off with a single and moved around to third on a sacrifice bunt and ground out. David Pine was plunked by a pitch to put the winning run at first base, but Cooke escaped by getting Tyler Orris to ground to shortstop Dylan Tice, who forced Pine at second base.
The top of Millersville's order continued to struggle in game two against Zambanini. The first four batters went a combined 0-for-22 on the day. Three of the Marauders' four hits in game two came off the bat of Mark Stuckey.
Game two starter Tad Barton (2-2) was solid through the first four innings, and Millersville took a 1-0 lead in the second. Dan Johnson reached on an error and came around to score when Pine singled to right field.
That would be all the Marauders would get, though. IUP broke open the game in the fifth. Brett Quiggle led off with a walk and Zinsmeister doubled putting two in scoring position. Dylan Tice was intentionally walked to load the bases. Ryan Uhl made the Marauders pay, driving in two with a single. Aaron Lupia plated another on a ground ball to short that skipped past Orris. Troy Foster drove in the fourth run of the inning on a ground out.
The Marauders never seriously threatened the rest of the way. Stuckey had hits in the fifth and the seventh but his teammates could not drive him home.
Millersville, now 13-7, hosts IUP Saturday for another doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
