Box Score 2 Shepherdstown, W.Va. - Millersville baseball extended its winning streak to seven before Shepherd ended the streak in game two of Saturday's doubleheader. The Marauders won game one 12-1 behind
Jeff Heisey's five RBIs, but could not come up with a big hit in the nightcap and fell by a 6-1 score.
Millersville (7-3) received three hits from
Evan King and
Mark Stuckey in the opener. Heisey doubled in a run and smacked the first grand slam of his career as part of a nine-run fifth inning that turned the game from a 1-1 tie into a rout. The homer was Heisey's second in as many games.
Tim Mayza (3-0) was surrendered just two hits and three walks over six innings of work. Freshman
Sean Stephenson came on in the seventh and pitched a shutout inning.
The Marauders totaled 15 hits, giving them at least 10 hits in eight of 10 games this season.
Dan Johnson and
Tyler McDonald both drove in two runs.
Millersville couldn't come up with the big hit it needed in game two, however. The Marauders recorded eight hits and drew four walks, and Shepherd committed four errors. Even with all the base runners, Millersville managed just one run in the seventh inning and stranded 15 runners.
The lone run came with the Marauders already trailed 6-0. Stuckey reached on a walk and scored on a
Tyler Orris RBI single. Millersville left at least one runner on base in all seven innings and stranded the bases loaded three times.
Jim McDade (1-1) pitched five innings, allowing three runs on four hits and no walks. He also struck out three. He allowed one run in the first and then pitched four scoreless frames before Shepherd jumped on him in the sixth. He exited with one out in the inning, but the bullpen could not escape the jam. Millersville went through two pitchers in the inning and gave up five runs on four hits, including a grand slam.
Orris finished with two hits for the second game in a row.
Millersville hosts Shepherd in its home opener Sunday afternoon. The doubleheader starts at 12 p.m.
