Box Score Winston-Salem, N.C. - For the second day in a row Millersville jumped out to an early lead on Winston-Salem State, but for the second day in a row that lead turned into a loss. On Saturday at BB&T Ballpark, Millersville committed three costly errors and walked six in a 15-7 loss.
For Millersville (0-2), it was the most runs allowed since 2010. Everything started to snowball in the Rams' (2-3) half of the second and over the next four innings, the Rams put 15 runs on the board.
Jim McDade was knocked out early in his first career start, surrendering five runs--one earned--on six hits in 2.2 innings.
Tad Barton (0-1) suffered the loss following a rough relief appearance. Scott Wells (1-0) notched the win for the Rams, allowing one run over 4.2 innings.
At the plate,
Zach Stone drove in three, and
Mark Stuckey went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a steal.
Evan King recorded a hit, two runs and a steal.
Jeff Heisey, who had three hits in the opener, continued his hot start with two doubles.
Mike Lebo also recorded a double and a single.
Millersville had an opportunity to pounce in the first, loading the bases with no outs, but Rams' started Jordan Carlton struck out the side to escape the jam. Millersville jumped on Carlton in the second, though. Stuckey plated two with a single, bouncing Carlton from the game. Stone drove in two more to put the Marauders on top, 4-0.
Winston-Salem State started the bottom of the inning with backt-to-back singles. A fielding error loaded the bases, and Brandon Harrison drove in two with a double. McDade escaped the inning without further damage, but he wouldn't get out of the third. He plunked the leadoff hitter and walked the second batter, and another Millersville error allowed a run to cross. Back-to-back doubles scored two more runs, giving the Rams a 5-4 lead. Barton entered and got out of the inning.
The Rams got to Barton in the fourth. Eight of the first nine batters reached on four singles, four walks and an error. The Rams eventually pushed seven runs across in the inning and extended their lead with three more runs on five hits in the fifth.
Millersville picked up two runs in the seventh on Heisey's RBI double, and a RBI single from
Tyler Orris.
The Marauders and Winston-Salem State close the three game series Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
