Marauders Falter Late in Season Opening Loss

Box Score Winston-Salem, N.C. - Tim Mayza threw 5.1 shutout innings, and the lineup provided a pair of early runs. But those two runs were all the Marauders would get Friday evening against Winston-Salem State. The Rams scored three in the final two innings spoil the Marauders' season opener, 3-2.

Redshirt junior first baseman Dan Johnson singled in Kurt Seiders and Mark Stuckey in the top of the first to put Millersville (0-1) on the board. Mayza cruised through 5.1 innings, surrendering five hits and a walk while fanning five. Jesse Mowen finished the sixth for Mayza with two strikeouts.

The 2-0 lead stood until the bottom of the eighth when everything unraveled for the Marauders. After pitching a 1-2-3 inning in the seventh, Evan Kirsch surrendered a walk and a single to the first two batters. Adam Zipko (0-1) entered but allowed two walks including one with the bases loaded. A double play scored the tying run, and after a batter was plunked, the go-ahead run scored on a throwing error.

The Marauders went down in order in the top of the ninth.

Jeff Heisey started his senior campaign with a 3-for-4 performance. Paco Martin led the Rams with four hits. John Marley picked up the win with two scoreless innings of relief.

Game two of the three game series at Winston-Salem State starts Saturday at 1 p.m.
