Box Score 2 Glenville, W.Va. - The temperatures hovered just above freezing all Sunday afternoon, but
Chris Murphy's fastball blazed and his off-speed pitches left Glenville State hitters waving in the frigid air. The sophomore struck out 13 and came within one fielding error of a perfect game in a seven-inning no-hitter against Glenville State Sunday. Millersville won the game 16-0 and completed the sweep after a 7-2 win in the doubleheader opener.
Murphy (3-0) earned his third win in as many Millersville starts and pushed the Marauders' (6-2) winning streak to six with his masterful performance. Of his 84 pitches, 64 were strikes. He did not walk or hit a single batter. The outing comes on the heels of pitching seven innings in a win over No. 6-ranked West Florida.
Murphy struck out seven of nine batters between the fourth and sixth innings. He is the second Marauder in as many seasons to throw a no hitter. His 13 strikeouts were the most by a PSAC pitcher in a seven-inning game since Shippensburg's Nate Starner's 16 on March 26, 2005.
With Murphy in control, the Marauders battered five Glenville pitchers for 11 hits and pushed across 10 runs in the seventh.
Zach Stone hit a grand slam and finished with five RBIs.
Jeff Heisey hit a home run as well. Freshman
Tyler Orris went 3-for-5 with three runs. Millersville scored five runs in the first two innings on sacrifice flies and wild pitches.
Game one starter
Tim Mayza's performance was outstanding as well. The junior lefty struck out eight and walked just one while scattering eight hits over six innings. His only run allowed was an opposite field home run in the second inning.
Millersville received two hits from four different players. Stone went 2-for-3.
David Pine went 2-for-4 and plated three runs.
Tyler McDonald went 2-for-3 with a two-run double, and Orris, who finished with five hits on the day, went 2-for-4.
Millersville led 2-1 entering the fifth and broke the game open when Pine singled off the center field wall, scoring two runs. McDonald followed with a bases loaded double, and the Marauders totaled five runs in the inning.
Over his first three starts, Murphy has surrendered just 14 hits, two walks and four runs over 20.0 innings pitched. He's also fanned 27. Mayza has surrendered 16 hits, three walks and two runs over 18.1 innings. Mayza has struck out 18.
Millersville returns to action on March 2 at Shepherd. The Marauders host Shepherd for their home opener the following day.
