Women Cruise Past Mounties to Set Up Showdown with Ship

Box Score Mansfield, Pa. – After letting an early 18-point lead get trimmed to just six by the end of the first half, the Marauders stepped on the gas in the second half, blowing out Mansfield Saturday afternoon at Decker Gymnasium, 90-59. Senada Mehmedovic paced the team, which won its seventh straight game, with 23 points.

Millersville's win improves the team to 19-6 and 16-5 in PSAC play. In the process, redshirt senior forward Aurielle Mosley extended her consecutive double-double streak to six games, posting 17 points and 11 rebounds. With a 6-of-9 shooting night, the York native has also hit 50 percent of her shots or better for the 11th time in her last 12 games.

The Marauders led wire-to-wire, opening with a four-point edge before racing out to an 18-point gap with 8:49 still to play in the opening half on a Mehmedovic 3-pointer. The junior guard had just three points in her past two games combined, including being shut out last Saturday at Kutztown but provided a scoring flurry in the first half that included eight points in a row on her own, the final three of which ballooned the lead to 18.

The three extended the score to 32-14, but after that shot, the Marauders slowly watched their lead shrink to as little as four when Mansfield closed the final eight minutes of the first half on a 21-9 run. That final run for the Mountaineers seemed to wake up Millersville as it headed to the locker room, and out of the break, the Marauders put the pedal to the metal.

After halftime, Millersville ramped up the pace, outscoring the Mounties by a 49-24 margin. The intermission wasn't enough to cool down Mehmedovic either. After the first 10:53 of the second half in which the Marauders again swelled the lead to 20 behind eight points from Mosley, the Carlisle native went on another scoring tear.

She ripped off 11 points in a row by herself, bookended by layups from freshman forward Yasmin Cooper. That scoring stretch included four layups and a trey. Mehmedovic finished shooting 9-of-15 from the floor and 3-of-6 from downtown.

Redshirt senior point guard Mashira Newman also had another tour-de-force performance, filling out the stat sheet with 14 points, nine assists, six rebounds, six steals and a block. She is now just five blocks from becoming the first women's player in program history to rank in the top 10 in all-time points, assists, steals and blocks.

Mehmedovic, Mosley and Newman were the only three players to go for double figures for the Marauders. With a combined 31 points from redshirt seniors Mosley and Newman, it gives the tandem 2,763 combined points for their respective careers, just 46 from attaining the distinction of the highest scoring pair of classmates in program history. The pair trails just 2001 graduates Sara Burcin and Safiyyah Bashir, who combined for 2,809.

The 11 rebounds for Mosley are also big, as they move the redshirt senior into second place all-time in career rebounding. The Central York High School product now has 977 rebounds, just 29 shy of breaking Kristy Garner's program record of 1,005. If Mosley can at least reach 1,000 rebounds, it will make her just the second player ever to have 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds, joining Garner.

While the offense hung 90 points on the Mountaineers Saturday, the defense was suffocating as usual, allowing less than 60 points for the 15th time this season. In games where the defense allows less than 60, Millersville is undefeated.

The win Saturday sets up a huge game with Shippensburg Wednesday night at Pucillo Gymnasium, where it will be Senior Night, honoring Mosley, Newman and forward Miesha Cousins. In that game, the Marauders control their own destiny against the Raiders.

With a win, Millersville will assure itself of hosting the PSAC Tournament and winning the PSAC East regular season crown. It will be the regular season finale for both teams, and the Marauders will also be looking to avenge an earlier road loss to Ship this season, 70-58. That was the last game Millersville lost before its current seven-game winning streak. Tip time for Wednesday's contest is 6 p.m.
