Mosley, Newman Power Marauders Past Warriors

Box Score Millersville, Pa. – Needing back-to-back wins over East Stroudsburg and Mansfield this week to set up a showdown for the PSAC East regular season title next Wednesday at home against Shippensburg, the women's basketball team got off to a good start, cruising past the Warriors 76-47 Wednesday on the back of Aurielle Mosley's fifth consecutive double-double.

The redshirt senior forward finished with 24 points, 10 rebounds, three steals, two blocks and two assists in only 24 minutes of play. Mosley's 24 points came on an efficient 9-of-12 shooting night from the floor, which marks the 10th time in her past 11 outings that she has hit at least 50 percent of her attempts.

The Marauders' other redshirt senior point guard Mashira Newman had her sights set on the illustrious quadruple-double, finishing with a dominant performance of 19 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and six steals. Mosley and Newman were the only two players to post double figure scoring for Millersville, and the win improved the team to 18-6, 15-5 in PSAC play.

Through 10:56 of the first half, the Warriors were hanging around, down just 18-16 after putting together a 5-0 run to pull within two. That was as close as ESU would get to the Marauders, as Millersville ripped off a 19-6 run throughout the rest of the first half, kicked off by a 3-pointer from Carly Gallagher on a dish from Mosley. Gallagher finished with eight points for the third-highest total on the team. Newman had seven of her 19 points in the run right before intermission and 12 total points before halftime.

Mosley, who was quiet in the first half with just five points, came out of the locker room on fire, dropping 19 points after the break. She hit for the first six Marauder points of the second stanza on two layups and a jumper with just over 2:30 gone in the half.

Even the six consecutive points to open the half could not equal what the five-time PSAC East Athlete of the Week's was about to do over a 3:55 span in the middle of the second half. From the 9:15 mark and the Millersville lead at 60-35, the York native strung together 11 points in a row, spanning all the way down to just 5:20 left in the game and ballooning the lead to 71-43.

Following that layup on a feed from Newman, Mosley played only 38 more seconds before checking out of the game for good and watching the rest of the game from the bench.

While Mosley and Newman were doing the damage on the offensive end, the defense clicked in the second half and limited the Warriors to just 25.8 percent shooting after the intermission on 31 field goal attempts. Millersville forced ESU into 28 turnovers for the game, turning those possession changes into a total of 31 points.

The Marauders also ruled the paint, outscoring East Stroudsburg 40-16 in the key. That inside scoring proved to be important, as Millersville shot just 5-of-19 from 3-point range, including 1-for-9 in the second half.

Fayola Moise was the top player for East Stroudsburg in this game, scoring 11 points to go with seven rebounds. The Marauders did their best to shut down ESU's best scorer and rebounder, as Jessica Martin finished with just nine points and six rebounds after entering the game with averages of 11.5 points and 8.7 rebounds per game.

The win keeps Millersville in control of its own destiny to host the PSAC Tournament. With two more wins to close out the season, the Marauders would assure themselves the opportunity to host the conference tournament. Getting those two wins will also be crucial to reaching the NCAA Tournament, as the NCAA Regional Rankings were released for the first time Wednesday.

In the NCAA Atlantic Region, Millersville is pegged at sixth. The top eight teams from the region are guaranteed a spot in the NCAA Tournament. Next up for the Marauders is a Saturday trip to Mansfield for the second-to-last game of the season. Earlier this year, Millersville defeated the Mountaineers at Pucillo by a 75-49 final. Tip time for Saturday's game is 1 p.m.
