GAME NOTES
· The Marauders enter Wednesday's game against East Stroudsburg scorching, winning five games in a row to match their longest streak of the season after opening the year at a 5-0 record. They've won the five successive games over Mansfield, Bloomsburg, West Chester, Cheyney and Kutztown by an average of 16.4 points per game. The team's 63-58 win over Kutztown Saturday was its win in a row in games decided by five points or less. Despite leading by 10 at half, Millersville had to hang on to win, allowing the Golden Bears to rally and tie the game late in the second half before recovering to claim the road victory. Even with the late rally, Kutztown could not solve Millersville's halftime lead. When ahead or tied at the half this season, the Marauders own a 14-0 overall, 11-0 PSAC record.
· February has been good to the Marauders, but it has been even better to Millersville's senior leader at forward,
Aurielle Mosley. Over the first five games of the the regular season's final month, the York native is making a charge up the ladder of the school's record books and a strong case for the PSAC East Player of the Year award. In her past five outings (all Marauder wins), Mosley is scoring 17.8 points per game and ripping down 12.4 boards per game. The efficiency with which she is scoring is what is most impressive about Mosley; over the five game string, she is shooting a sizzling 56.3 percent from the field. Her strong play goes even further back, dating to the last meeting with the Warriors, when she scored 20 points to go along with eight rebounds. Over those eight games going all the way back to Jan. 23, her averages are 18.9 points per game and 12 rebounds per game. With a total of 956 rebounds in her career, she is just 49 away from tying Kristy Garner's school mark of 1,005 and 50 away from breaking it. With four guaranteed games remaining on the team's schedule in 2012-13, she would need at least 12.5 per game to break the record. She also sits at sixth in all-time scoring and claimed the PSAC East's Athlete of the Week award this week for the fifth time in the 2012-13 season.
· The next two games for Millersville are a good chance to take advantage of the schedule and gear up for a final battle with Shippensburg on Feb. 27 at home for the top seed from the East in the PSAC Tournament. The Marauders' next two opponents are a combined 12-34 and 9-29 in PSAC play. If the team can get to 19-6 and 16-5 in PSAC play (which would require consecutive wins over East Stroudsburg and Mansfield), it will be set up nicely for the season final game against the Raiders.
· Millersville's defensive prowess has been on display all season long. On that end of the floor, the Marauders are allowing just 59.1 points per game, tied with California (Pa.) for fourth-best in the PSAC. Good thing too that the team allows just a hair under 60 points per game; Millersville has held 13 opposing offenses under 60 points this season and has a 13-0 mark in those games (12-0 PSAC). The scoring defense also ranks second in the division, just less than a point more per game than Bloomsburg surrenders at 58.2 points per game.
· While the first meeting between these teams was important in kick-starting Mosley's strong play, it also was a memorable night for the Marauders' other redshirt senior leader, point guard
Mashira Newman. Newman tallied 11 steals to break the previous school record of 10 in that game. Her 11 steals came along with eight points, six assists, three rebounds and a block.
Senada Mehmedovic was also strong off the bench in that game at Koehler Fieldhouse, hitting for 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting and 4-of-8 from deep. The Carlisle native may also come out looking for her shot against the Warriors, as she just had a 22-game scoring streak snapped after being shut out Saturday at Kutztown.
ABOUT EAST STROUDSBURG
· East Stroudsburg enters Pucillo Gymnasium Wednesday night alternating wins and losses in its past four contests. Most recently, the Warriors dropped a 20-point loss at Shippensburg Saturday, 67-47, but did claim a 67-39 rout of Mansfield last Wednesday at home. Before that, the Warriors were topped in overtime at home by Kutztown, 76-65, after beating Cheyney, 62-47, on Feb. 6. The win over the Wolves was just the sixth of the season and halted a five-game losing skid.
· In addition to holding just a 24-46 record all-time against the Marauders, the Warriors have had their struggles when traveling to Millersville. East Stroudsburg is just 5-27 in 32 games played between the teams on Millersville's home floor, and hasn't beaten the Marauders on the road since Feb. 17, 2007, spanning six consecutive trips to Pucillo Gymnasium. The Warriors have lost those six games in a row by an average of 15.5 points per game.
· These teams have already met once this season, back on Jan. 23, with Millersville coming away with a 69-55 victory. In the loss, sophomore forward Jessica Martin led the team with a solid all-around performance, scoring 15 points, pulling down 13 boards and posting three assists, three steals and three blocks. But Martin's efforts were not enough to overcome a balanced Marauder attack that saw five players post eight or more points, led by Mosley's 20. East Stroudsburg never led at any point in the game.
· Despite the 7-16 record, the Warriors have clinched a playoff berth in the PSAC Tournament courtesy of a 6-13 record in conference play. The Warriors are locked into the sixth and final PSAC East seed in the tournament and cannot catch fifth-seeded West Chester. Just three games remain in the regular season, and the Warriors trail the Golden Rams by four games.
· One factor the Warriors do have working in their favor is the services of Martin, one of the best all-around players in the conference with averages 11.5 points per game and 8.7 rebounds per game. That rebounding rate is good enough to rank her fifth in the PSAC, and her scoring average ranks her 16th in the conference among qualified players. No other player for East Stroudsburg scores in double figures, making Martin's success that much more important to the team's success.
· While the Warriors do have a middle-of-the-pack defense in allowing just 64.3 points per game, the team's downfall this season has been its offense. East Stroudsburg is third-to-last in the conference on the offensive end of the floor, managing just 57.7 points per game. Even further bad news for the Warriors in terms of Wednesday's matchup is the fact that they have scored less than 60 points in 13 of their 23 games. That plateau is crucial to the Marauders, and if East Stroudsburg cannot manage to break 60 points, it could spell a long night for the Warriors.
