California, Pa. -Â The Millersville women's basketball team shot a red-hot 51.8 percent from the field to defeat California (Pa.) 91-76 on Saturday night. Five different Marauders scored in double figures, leading Millersville to its seventh consecutive season opening win dating back to the 2006-07 season.
This was Millersville's most lopsided win over CalU since Jan. 13, 2001 (81-56), but Saturday's game was close until the Marauders pulled away with a late run. The score was tied 64-64 with just over eight minutes to play in the game. The Marauders then used a 27-12 run to close out the game and seal the victory. During that stretch, Millersville was 11-of-14 from the free throw line and 8-of-11 from the field.
Carly Gallagher, one of only two returning starters, quickly stepped into a leadership role with the departures of Aurielle Mosley, Mashira Newman and Miesha Cousins. The redshirt junior from East Stroudsburg, Pa. led all scorers with 24 points to go with four rebounds and three assists.
Millersville led by as many as seven in the first half and went into the break with a 41-37 advantage. Gallagher led all scorers at the break with 14 points and hit 2-of-2 from behind the arc.
The visitors pushed their lead to 10, 51-41 to open the second half. Six points from Senada Mehmedovic and four from Yasmin Cooper fueled the 10-4 run. CalU stayed close, though, and was finally able to tie the score up at 57-57. The game saw two more ties at 58-58 and 64-64 before the Marauders' closing run.
Millersville outrebounded CalU 54-39 including 40-20 on the defensive glass and outscored the Vulcans 42-36 in the paint.
Celeste Robinson tied her career-high in points with 16 and added nine boards, two assists and two steals. Senada Mehmedovic added 14 points, four assists and three steals. Yasmin Cooper registered her first career double double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, both of which are career highs. Sabina Mehmedovic also tallied a career-high in points with 11.
The Marauders will compete in the Clarion Tournament on Nov. 15 and 16 against West Liberty and Charleston. Both of those games are set to tipoff at 4 p.m.
