Gettysburg, Pa. - It didn't take long for freshman Danielle Freed to win her first collegiate tournament. In just the fifth event of her career, Freed earned medalist honors and led the Millersville women's golf team to a first-place finish at Tuesday's Gettysburg Invitational hosted at Hershey Country Club West Course.
Millersville won its second team title of the fall campaign behind three Marauders placing in the top 10. Along with Freed's winning round, Amber Rohrer placed third, and Jaimie Wharton took second. The Marauders finished with a team score of 67-over-par, besting Gettysburg by eight shots and running away from the rest of the five-team field.
Freed's 13-over-par 86 was the best 18-hole round of her young Marauder career and it was good enough to edge Gettysburg's Kara McNulty and Wharton by one. Wharton's runner-up finish gives her three top-four finishes this season.
Rohrer posted a 17-over-par 90 to place seventh. Kendal Olear shot a 96 to come in 12th place. Allison Wray placed 17th.
Freed became the fourth different Marauder on the current roster have won individual tournament title.
Tuesday's tournament may prove to be just the tune-up that the Marauders need for the upcoming PSAC Championships as it will be held on Hershey Country Club's East Course on Oct. 19-20.
