Clymer, N.Y. - Almost a month away from the golf course and two missed tournaments did nothing to slow Conor Gilbert. The Millersville junior returned to the lineup in grand fashion, winning the Howard "Bud" Elwell Fall Classic at Peek'n Peak Resort and leading his team to a third-place finish.
Gilbert was rolling with three top-10 finishes and back-to-back third-place finishes when he suffered a back injury in practice. He missed the next two tournaments but played his best golf of the season Sunday and Monday. He fired back-to-back even-par rounds to finish with a 144 total, edging West Chester's Andrew Patterson, who finished at 1-over-par. The win was Gilbert's first after nine career top-10 finishes.
His play sparked Millersville to a 605 team total, which was seven shots off the pace set by champion West Chester. The Marauders opened with a 301 total and trailed West Chester by eight shots after day one. The Marauders' 304 on day two was tied with Waterloo for low score of the day, but it wasn't enough to catch West Chester.
Gilbert was one of three Marauders to finish in the top 10. Senior Robert Coyne finished at 6-over-par and in solo possession of sixth place. Sophomore Robby Rowe posted his third consecutive top-10 finish with a 9-over-par total. Jonathon Heile tied for 25th. Freshman Nathan Hertzog, playing as an individual, did not count toward the team score, but tied for 17th at 11-over-par.
The tournament was Millersville's final tune-up for the PSAC Championships, which begin Saturday at Hershey Links in Hummelstown, Pa. Millersville tees off at 9 a.m.
