Box Score Shippensburg, Pa. - Millersville and Shippensburg found out Saturday that the difference between the No. 1 and No. 2 field hockey teams in Division II is razor thin. The Raiders, playing on home turf, needed extra time to squeak past Millersville for a close, 1-0 win.
No. 1 Shippensburg (12-0, 5-0 PSAC) received a breakaway goal from Megan Jett 7:55 into overtime to hand No. 2 Millersville (9-1, 4-1 PSAC) its first loss of the season. Jett's goal was the first allowed by Millersville in more than 330 minutes of action--a span of four regulation games and seven-plus minutes of overtime.
The clubs were as evenly matched as the top two teams in the nation should be. The Marauders controlled play in the first half, putting four shots on goal and taking four penalty corners to Shippensburgs three. The difference came in overtime, where Millersville could not muster a shot and took just one corner compared to Ship's five shots and four corners.
Millersville threatened early and often, taking four shots in the first 3:05, and the three place on goal were saved by Carenna Neely. Shippensburg had a late, first half scoring opportunity but Bre White's shot was saved by
Lauren Sotzin. Less than a minute later, White took another shot but it was wide.
The Marauders had few scoring opportunities over the final 42:55 of play.
Hannah Whitman's shot with just over 15 minutes left was saved, and
Brittany Troutman pushed a shot wide with 4:39 to go.
The teams headed for overtime with the score locked at zero, and Shippensburg took the upperhand quickly, forcing three corners in the first two minutes. Ship's first three shots of the extra session were blocked in front of Sotzin or went wide. Nearing the eight minute mark of the overtime, Jett and White received a two-on-one breakaway opportunity. Jett's first shot was denied by Sotzin, but she picked up her own rebound and scored the game-winner.
The golden goal was Jett's second of the season, and Ship's second overtime win.
For Millersville, the loss halted a school record-tying nine-game winning streak. It was also the first time this season that the team scored fewer than two goals in a game.
Samantha Ruane and
Champayne Hess led the team with two shots. Sotzin made four saves.
Millersville will have to bounce back quickly as it returns home to play Newberry Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.
