Marauders Can't Overcome 31 Points from Brown in Loss to Fighting Scots

Box Score Millersville, Pa. – Despite an all-around performance from senior Mashira Newman that included 23 points, five steals, four assists and three rebounds, Millersville could not overcome a 31- point night from the conference's second-leading scorer, Kiara Brown Saturday evening at Pucillo Gymnasium, falling to Edinboro by a 69-64 final.

Brown's outburst of 31 points came with urgency for the Fighting Scots, as Samantha Blazetic, the PSAC's best scorer at 17.6 points per game coming in, was tied down by the Marauder defense. Blazetic faced a strong defensive effort from Millersville that limited Edinboro's scoring threat in the post to only 10 points on six shots, but she did register a double-double with 10 rebounds. The Marauders trailed most of the game and were only able to capture the lead momentarily in the second half.

The visiting Fighting Scots raced out to a 10-3 in the first five minutes of the game on the strength of an 8-0 run after Millersville took the first of just two one-point leads the team saw all game long when a Newman layup made the score 3-2. The only other time the Marauders were able to reclaim the lead came with 14:54 in the second half on a Carly Gallagher 3-pointer to give Millersville a 39-38 edge.

Aurielle Mosley was the only other Millersville player in double figures, checking in with 16 points and 12 rebounds to give her the fourth double-double of her season and 40th of her brilliant career. She also chipped in defensively with two blocks and a steal. Celeste Robinson had four more steals, giving Millersville 14 as a team, doubling Edinboro's total of seven. The reigning PSAC East Freshman of the Week also posted six points, three rebounds, two assists and a block.

For as strong of an effort as the Marauders put forth, Saturday night belonged to Brown, who did her damage in all fashions, shooting 9-of-18 from the field, 2-for-7 from the perimeter and 11-of-13 from the charity stripe. She had 11 points in the first half to give the Fighting Scots an 11-point halftime lead that swelled to Edinboro's largest lead of the contest at 13 points early in the second half.

The Marauders had fight in them, going on an 18-4 run after Edinboro opened the scoring following intermission, but Brown again caught fire, as her 20 second half points included a stretch where she scored nine consecutive Fighting Scot points in the midst of Millersville's comeback attempt.

After the Marauders took their only second half lead at the 14:54 mark by a point, Edinboro rallied for seven straight points (five by Brown) to take a six point lead and never looked back. It was especially challenging when the Fighting Scots turned up the pace on the Marauders, as the visitors claimed a 10-4 edge over Millersville in transition points.

The Marauders get nearly a full week off before hitting the road for next weekend's PSAC crossover. It will be the final set of games against PSAC West opponents for Millersville this season. Friday's first game of the weekend is against California (Pa.) with a 5:30 p.m. tip. The Marauders are just 9-21 all-time against the Vulcans, but have won two of the past three meetings.

Saturday, Millersville travels to Indiana (Pa.) for another 5:30 p.m. start. The team is marginally better against the Crimson Hawks, holding an 11-19 record in the all-time series. Similar to the series against Cal, the Marauders have taken two of the past three against IUP, including a 58-55 win last year on the road, when IUP was ranked No. 24 nationally.
