Ship's Free Throw Shooting Holds Marauders at Bay

Box Score Shippensburg, Pa. – In a crucial PSAC East battle at Shippensburg Wednesday night, the Raiders came out on the winning end, claiming a 70-58 victory over visiting Millersville to drop the Marauders to 12-6 overall and 9-5 in league play.

Despite another monster effort from redshirt senior forward Aurielle Mosley, Millersville could not overcome a Ship team that made the most free throws in a game in roughly a year and attempted the most free throws in a game by a PSAC team since the 2009-10 season.

Mosley's 22 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks were not enough, as the Raiders made an astounding 32-of-43 free throws. It was the third straight game that the reigning PSAC East Athlete of the Week hit the 20-point plateau, and she did so on 9-of-18 shooting.

The Marauders committed 29 personal fouls, which is the most for a Millersville team in more than a decade, as are the totals for opponents free throws made and attempted. Ship had more attempts from the line (43) than it did from the field (39) and made twice as many free throws (32) as it did field goals (16).

Mosley had two other teammates join her in double-figure scoring. Miesha Cousins and Carly Gallagher each scored 10 points apiece. Despite being one of three players to hit double digits, Mosley was also one of three players to foul out of the contest, joining Cousins and Celeste Robinson with that distinction.

Despite the foul disparity (Ship committed just 18), Millersville hung around all game. The Raiders didn't take their first double digit lead until 2:52 left in the game. Just before that point, the Marauders looked to have a comeback going when Mosley canned her sixth triple of the year with 7:06 to play. That 3-pointer closed the gap to just four points at 55-51 in favor of Shippensburg.

Shippensburg also shut down Marauder senior point guard Mashira Newman, who only managed three points for her lowest total of the year. Newman did chip in six rebounds, five assists, two steals and a block, but shot just 1-of-10 from the field. As a team, Millersville shot 35.5 percent for the game and just 28.6 percent from deep.

Dana Wert (17 points) led a Ship team that shot a scorching 46.2 percent from 3-point range for the game. Wert made 14 of her 18 attempts from the free throw line and her sister, Shawna Wert, made 3-of-4 3-pointers for 11 points. The Wert sisters were the only two Raider players to score in double digits.

Even though the Marauders held a decided edge in the paint (32-18) courtesy of Mosley, the Raiders second unit outscored the Millersville bench by a 26-7 margin. Millersville did have an edge on the glass, outrebounding Ship by a total of 43-35.

The Marauders will look to right the ship Saturday at home against a Mansfield team that has never won in 31 trips to Millersville. Tip time for Millersville-Mansfield is slated for 1 p.m.
