Box Score West Chester, Pa. – Millersville went from one end of the defensive spectrum to the other Saturday. One game after allowing the lowest point total since the season-opener in 2009, the Marauders tied the second-highest point total allowed during the
Mary Fleig tenure at West Chester in a 94-78 loss to the Golden Rams.
The 94 points was the most a Fleig-coached team allowed since the final game of the 2000-01 season at West Chester on Feb. 27, 2001 in the PSAC Tournament. The loss allows the Golden Rams to gain a game on the Marauders in the PSAC East standings, as Millersville drops to 10-5 (7-4 PSAC). West Chester climbs to 9-6 and 6-5 in conference play.
Freshman guard
Celeste Robinson came within one point of tying a career-high and recorded her first career double-double and the first double-digit rebounding game of her rookie season. She provided the team with a strong performance of 14 points and 11 rebounds. She added three assists in a career-high 38 minutes.
Senada Mehmedovic led the Marauders with 18 points and four steals.
As strong as Robinson and Mehmedovic were, Millersville was no match for a West Chester team that had seven players score at least eight points. The leader of the Golden Ram attack was Brittany Sicinski, who dropped 20 points on 6-for-10 shooting. West Chester as a team shot a brilliant 45.2 percent, busting the Marauder defense open by shooting 7-of-15 from deep.
Compounding the problem was the fact that Millersville's 21 turnovers led to 34 Golden Ram points. Inversely, West Chester turned the ball over just 16 times, and the Marauders couldn't make the home team pay for its mistakes in the same way, posting just 16 points off turnovers.
After the score was tied at 9-9 early, West Chester went on a 31-23 run to close the first half and the Golden Rams were just warming up. They shot 46.8 percent in the second half and led by as many as 21 with 12:20 left in the game. The second unit also provided an edge in favor of West Chester, as the Golden Ram bench outscored the Marauder bench by 15, 39-24.
Millersville has another matchup with West Chester remaining at Pucillo Gymnasium, but will have to wait until Feb. 9 for a shot at avenging Saturday's loss. Next up for the Marauders is a trip to East Stroudsburg on Wednesday. The team owns a 45-24 all-time record against its PSAC East foe and had won 10 in a row in the series before dropping last year's road visit to Kohler Fieldhouse, 65-58 on Feb. 15, 2012. Tip time against the Warriors is slated for 6 p.m.
