
Underclassmen Lead Marauders at Golden Bear Invitational

Kutztown, Pa. - In its first event of 2013 the Millersville women's indoor track and field team was led by all underclassmen, who had six top-10 finishes to conclude an impressive outing at the Golden Bear Invitational.
Sophomore Kiara Allen and freshman Erin Madison finished with the best performances on the evening as both athletes finished fourth overall in their respective events. Allen ran the 55-meter dash in a time of 7.54, just two-tenths of a second slower than East Stroudsburg's Rachel Pierantozzi, who ran the top time of 7.34.
Madison placed fourth in the 200-meter dash when she crossed the finish line in a time of 27.97. Madison was narrowly edged out by less than one-tenth of a second for a second place finish and less than four-tenths for the top time. The Marlton, N.J. native also placed 16th in the 55-meter dash after finishing in 7.92.
Another underclassmen that competed well at Kutztown was freshman Kayla Naughton. Naughton placed in the top-10 in both the 55-meter dash and the 200-meter dash. The Upper Darby product finished in seventh in the 55-meter dash with a 7.61 time and eighth in the 200-meter dash after crossing the finish line at 28.31.
On the field side, redshirt freshman Mary Stewart placed seventh in one of the first events of the evening, the long jump. Stewart's 4.91 meter leap was her second best of the season and just short of Kutztown's Katie Catania who had the best jump at 5.55 meters.
Sophomore Ann Kovacs also placed seventh for the Marauders in the weight throw. Kovacs' throw of 12.66 meters was just ahead of teammate Nicole Sokira who had a toss of 12.20. Sokira placed ninth in the weight throw, while freshman Vanessa Hower joined Kovacs and Sokira in the top-15 with a throw of 10.89 to give her a 14th-place finish. Sokira also placed 20th in the shot put with a distance of 8.45 meters.
The Marauders have exactly two weeks to prepare for their next meet as they head to Lewisburg for the Bison Open at Bucknell University. Events will take place on Jan. 25 and 26.
