West Lafayette, Ohio - With an opportunity to score some key head-to-head wins over NCAA Atlantic Region programs, the Millersville men's golf team stumbled at the rain-shortened Powerade Atlantic Region Invitational, finishing 15th in a field of 20 teams.
The 36-hole event was cut to just 27 holes after Monday's action was postponed. Millersville stood in 13th after a first round 314 total. While sophomore Conor Gilbert charged his way up the leaderboard, the rest of the squad slipped back. The Marauders were also handicapped by a disqualification, which made them unable to throw out the low score individual score.
Gilbert, who posted a 75 on Sunday, delivered a 1-under-par 35 on the final nine holes to move from 27th into a tie for 11th on the individual leaderboard. Matt Lutz's opening round 81 was paired with a 39 Tuesday, placing him in a tie for 63rd. Robert Coyne posted a 77 in the opening round but faltered with a 5-over 41 Tuesday. Tim See slipped from 70th position on Sunday into 89th.
Millersville's 474 total placed it five strokes behind W.Va. State and Pitt-Johnstown. Indiana (Pa.) ran away with the team title by posting a 434, which was seven shots better than Concord.
Medalist honors went to Jake Brawley of California (Pa.) and Griffith Basehore of West Chester, who were 1-under for the tournament.
Millersville travels on Sept. 29-30 for the Vulcan Invitational held at Cedarbrook Golf Course in Belle Vernon, Pa.
