Huskies Nip Marauders in Overtime

Box Score Millersville, Pa. - Millersville field hockey came oh-so-close to ending its 22-year drought against Bloomsburg Wednesday at Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium. But after game went into overtime, the No. 3 Huskies received a golden goal from Brooke Simonovich, and Bloomsburg survived, 1-0.

Marauder (5-3, 1-1 PSAC East) goalkeeper Lauren Sotzin turned away a career-high 12 shots she faced.  With under eight minutes remaining in the first overtime, Bloomsburg (7-1, 2-0 PSAC East) received an attacking opportunity and in a span of seconds, fired three shots at Sotzin. Sotzin saved the first two, but the ball bounced to her left after the second. In the midst of a scrum, Simonovich lifted the ball over Sotzin shoulder and into the cage for the game-winner.

Millersville played the Huskies evenly for the entire contest. Bloomsburg held a slight 25-15 advantage in shots, including a 9-2 edge in shots during the overtime session. Bloomsburg also held a 15-11 edge in corners.

The Marauders best scoring opportunity the overtime session came on a breakaway. Ashley Weber carried the ball into the left side of the circle before centering a pass to a sprinting Champayne Hess. Just as Hess put her stick on the ball, Bloomsburg keeper Megan Eppley cut off the angle and tipped it away.

Weber had another shot at the 75:25 mark saved by Eppley. Eppley totaled 10 saves for her third shutout of the season.

Rachel Dickinson totaled five shots and Samantha Ruane added three shots for the Marauders.

All three of Millersville's losses have come by 2-1 scores and to nationally-ranked opponents.

The Marauders' schedule gets no easier as they travel to defending national champion and No. 2-ranked West Chester Saturday. Game time is 1 p.m.
