Bloomsburg, Pa. – The men's tennis team was hoping to right the ship in this weekend's PSAC Individual Championships after last weekend's 8-0 defeat at the hands of La Salle. The Marauders had a rough go of it, however, and were only able to advance one player past the first round in either bracket.
In singles play, Jody Sambrick Jr. was the only Marauder to advance past the first round. Sambrick beat Ben Nance from Kutztown in back-to-back sets by a score of 6-4, 6-0. Sambrick, however, was forced to bow out at the hands of Robert Rizea from Mercyhurst in his next match, 6-2, 6-3.
Other Millersville players in the singles bracket were Tucker Mertz, who dropped two sets to top-seeded Rush Amin of Kutztown, 6-1, 6-2. Corey Garnier also was ousted in the first round, dropping a pair of sets to Kevin Caldwell from Edinboro. Caldwell defeated Garnier by scores of 6-1 and 6-2.
Millersville only had the pairing of Sambrick and Garnier in doubles play. That duo dropped an 8-5 decision to Edinboro's combo of Amir Talab and Brandon Romain.
There is consolation play tomorrow if any of the Marauders that played today decide to take part. Otherwise, Millersville's next match comes Sept. 29 against Fairmont State at Kutztown University. That match is tabbed with a 9 a.m. start time.
