Box Score
Butler, Pa. - Playing with its season on the line, the Millersville baseball team scored six runs in the first two innings of Thursday's PSAC Tournament elimination game against California (Pa.). With a comfortable lead, the Marauders coasted to a 6-2 win and advanced to see a third postseason game.
Millersville (25-22-1) plays Friday at 12:30 p.m. against the loser of the Shippensburg/Mercyhurst tilt. The win also marked the fifth consecutive PSAC Tournament appearance in which the Marauders won at least one game.
Redshirt freshman
Kurt Seiders, who plated Millersville's only run against Mercyhurst on Wednesday, drove in three more against California.
Jeff Heisey also plated two, and
Mike August drove in one while going 2-for-4.
Starter
Tim Mayza (4-2) allowed two or fewer earned runs for the fifth consecutive start, going seven innings and allowing one run on six hits. He also struck out six and walked one.
Mayza was given plenty of breathing room early.
Evan King led off the Millersville half of the first inning with a single. He eventually moved to third and scored when Seiders grounded out to shortstop. The Marauders built on the lead in the next frame.
Chris Edgar and
Tyler McDonald drew back-to-back walks to start the inning. Freshman
David Pine bunted both into scoring position, and Coach
Jon Shehan's strategy worked perfectly as Heisey singled in both Edgar and McDonald to stretch the lead to 3-0. Heisey scored on a single from August, and Seiders collected his second and third RBIs of the game on a single to right.
That big inning chased Vulcan starter Justin Taylor after 1.1 innings. Jim Kirker came on and did not allow another run over the final 6.2 innings, but the damage had been done.
After seven strong innings, Mayza handed the ball to
Jason Long. Long gave up a homer to Chuck Gasti before
Adam Zipko worked a scoreless 1.2 innings to compete the Marauder win.
Mayza has now made two starts in the PSAC Tournament and has allowed just one run on nine hits in 14.0 innings. Zipko's 23rd appearance of the season tied him for fourth in Millersville history with Eric Eckert's 2000 season total.
