Black's Pitching Gets Series Win for Marauders

Game 1 | Game 2

Mansfield, Pa. - After a season-long string of misfortune, Brian Black finally got his first win of the season as Millersville topped Mansfield 4-0 in Saturday's opener. Mansfield denied the Marauders a series sweep, though, beating them 6-0 in the finale.

By taking three of four from Mansfield (9-25, 2-10 PSAC East), the Marauders (19-16, 7-9 PSAC East) have crept back into the PSAC Tournament chase and now trails Bloomsburg by one game for the final spot with two series left.

Black (1-5) was outstanding, holding Mansfield to just two hits and two walks while striking out four in a complete-game shutout. It was his first win in eight appearances and five starts despite boasting a team-best 2.57 ERA. He has allowed two or fewer earned runs in all seven of eight appearances.

Through three innings, it looked as if the Marauder bats were not going to support Black again. But in the fourth, a Zach Stone sacrifice fly scored Evan King, who put himself on third with a double and a stolen base.

Millersville nursed the one-run lead until the seventh when the first four batters either walked or recorded a hit. Kurt Seiders, Chris Edgar and Tyler McDonald all drove in runs to put the Marauders in front, 4-0.

Black closed the door in the seventh with little drama. He walked the second batter of the inning but escaped by retiring the next two batters.

Dan Johnson and Seiders both finished the game with two hits.

After three-straight strong pitching performances from the Marauders, it was Mansfield's turn in the finale. Andy Young (3-4) blanked the Marauders over seven innings, allowing just three hits and two walks.

Tim Mayza (2-2) worked four innings and allowed two runs--one in the third and one in the fourth. The Mountaineers blew the game wide open in the bottom of the sixth off of the usually steady Adam Zipko. Mansfield scored three runs in the frame, putting Millersville well out of reach.

Johnson had two of Millersville's three hits. Freshman catcher David Pine had a hit and walked once.

Millersville travels to Indiana (Pa.) on Tuesday before hosting PSAC East-leading West Chester on Friday for the start of an all-important series.
