Game 1 |
Game 2
Millersville, Pa. - On Friday at Marauder Park, Millersville baseball rediscovered the formula that led it to a PSAC East title in 2011. Dominating starting pitching and timely hitting worked to perfection in the doubleheader sweep of Mansfield.
Brooks Rothschild and
Tad Barton pitched complete games, and the Marauders rolled to wins by scores of 8-2 and 7-1.
The two wins were crucial for a Marauder club that is trying to dig itself out of a PSAC East hole and put itself in playoff contention. The Marauders improved to 18-15 overall and 6-8 in the division with two games at Mansfield (8-23, 1-9 PSAC East) Saturday.
In addition to the pitching efforts, it was a monster day at the plate for redshirt freshman
Kurt Seiders. He went 5-for-8 and was a home run short of the cycle in game one before adding two hits in the nightcap. The most red-hot hitter on the team, redshirt freshman
Tyler McDonald, extended his hitting streak to nine games and blasted a home run in both games.
Millersville put early pressure on the Mansfield pitching staff, scoring four runs on five hits in the bottom of the second. A couple of the runs were helped in by Mansfield fielding errors. Starter Louis Sick (2-2) lasted just 1.2 innings.
Rothschild (6-2) allowed two runs in the third but settled in after that. He went the distance, scattering five hits and three walks while striking out seven.
The Marauder bats tacked on three more in the fifth. Seiders tripled in two runs, and
Chris Edgar added a RBI single. Seiders finished the game with three a single, double, triple, two runs and two RBIs.
Mike August, Edgar and McDonald all had two hits.
Game two was the same story. Barton (3-1) was nearly unhittable for the first 6.1 innings. He extended his scoreless innings streak to 15.1 before giving up a solo home run in the top of the seventh. Barton fanned six, walked two and surrendered just four hits. He's allowed just two earned runs and 14 hits in his last 20 innings of work.
Zach Stone, who went 3-for-3 with three RBIs in the game, got the Marauders rolling in the second with a bases-loaded single.
The Marauders kept rolling in the fourth.
Jeff Heisey led off with a double, and
Evan King brought him home with a single. Stone drove in another to give Millersville a 4-0 advantage. August plated two with a double in the fifth, and McDonald's second homer of the day came in the sixth.
During McDonald's nine-game hitting streak, he's hitting .464 (13-for-28) with three doubles, and eight RBIs.
Zach Stone has been just as good, hitting .455 (10-for-22) with 11 RBIs and four doubles in his last eight games. He has four multi-hit games in that stretch.
Millersville has now won five of the last six against Mansfield.
