West Chester, Pa. - The spring of 2012 has been a rebirth for the Millersville men's golf team. A week after winning the Eastern University Invitational, the Marauders took second place at Dr. Edwin B. Cottrell Invitational. Leading the way was senior Shane Henry, who captured his first career tournament title by fighting off a strong, gusting wind at Penn Oaks Country Club.
Henry stood tied for fourth place and three strokes off the pace entering Tuesday's second round. On a difficult scoring day in which only eight of the 46 golfers in the field cracked 80, Henry shot the second-lowest round of the day with a 3-over-par 74. Paired with his opening-round 76, Henry finished at 8-over-par, besting Indiana (Pa.) Crimson Hawk Brad Boyle by one stroke.
Henry's victory makes him the first Marauder to earn medalist honors since Nick Magenta's win at the Gannon Invitational in the fall of 2009. A veteran of 34 career tournaments, his previous best finish was a 10th-place finish at the 2010 PSAC Championships.
As a team, the Marauders shot a 322 total in the second round and finished at 631, 18 shots behind IUP but 11 strokes in front of Mercyhurst. After a tumultuous fall campaign, the Marauders needed a strong spring to put themselves into NCAA regional qualifying contention. So far, the team placed fifth in a 16-team field at the St. James Plantation Invitational and first out of six teams at the Eastern University Invitational. With Tuesday's runner-up placement, the Marauders finished ahead of three regional opponents.
Freshman Conor Gilbert, who placed second a week ago, entered the second round tied for second again, but an 82 placed him in a tie for 11th with a 158 total. Senior Brian Cooper shot rounds of 77 and 83 to finish 18-over-par and tied for 14th. Jeff Stokes tied for 18th at 21-over, and Chris Fieger placed 33rd with a 171 total.
Millersville is now on a break until April 15 when it travels to the Cecil C. Spadafora Invitational in Indiana, Pa.
