Indiana, Pa. - The Millersville men's golf team continued to push toward a NCAA Atlantic/East Super Regional bid by placing in a three-way tie for sixth at the two-day Cecil Spadafora Invitational at Indiana Country Club.
The Marauders entered the event still on the outside of the regional top 10, but a strong showing against a field of teams in contention couldn't hurt its cause. Millersville finished ahead of Davis & Elkins, Pitt-Johnstown, West Liberty and Gannon--all of which were in front of the Marauders in the ranking.
Millersville's first-round 302 and second-round 303 placed it at 37-over-par and knotted with West Chester and Mercyhurst. Indiana (Pa.) easily took the team crown at 5-over-par on the par 71 track.
IUP's Brad Boyle set the pace with a 1-under-par total. Marauder senior Shane Henry, two weeks removed from the first tournament win of his career, placed ninth at 4-over-par. He shot back-to-back rounds of 73. Robert Coyne's 8-over total was good enough to tie him for 19th.
Freshman Tim See opened with a 79 but shot a second-round 75 to finish in a tie for 35th. Brian Cooper tied for 43rd at 14-over-par.
Millersville's hopes for cracking the region's top 10 relies heavily on the Wheeling Jesuit Invitational on April 22-23 where several WVIAC foes will be competing. The Marauders last played in the tournament in the fall of 2009, finishing second in a field of nine teams.
