Game 1 |
Game 2
Indiana, Pa. - Millersville and Indiana (Pa.) went to extra innings twice on Sunday, and twice the homestanding Crimson Hawks clipped the Marauders with 5-4 walk-off wins.
Millersville (22-19) was coming off three consecutive wins over No. 5 West Chester while IUP was coming off of two losses to Clarion. In both of Sunday's games, Millersville held a late-inning lead only to lose it both times.
In game one, the Marauders led 4-3 in the bottom of the sixth when IUP tied the score on a RBI triple from John Beatty. The Marauders put runners on base in the sixth and seventh but could not score against starter Evan Phillips or either reliever.
Marauder reliever
Adam Zipko (0-1), who entered in the fifth, worked into the eighth for his longest outing of the season, and with two on base, Aaron Lupia singled. The would-be winning run was cut down at the plate, however, on a throw from
Kurt Seiders to
Ryan Chesler. IUP was undaunted, though, and continued its rally. Two batters later, Beatty's sacrifice fly pushed the winning run across the plate.
Millersville received 3-for-4, two-RBI performance from Chesler, and two hits from
Chris Edgar and
Evan King. The loss for Zipko was his first since the first outing of his freshman season on Feb. 20, 2011.
Mike McMonagle received a no decision after allowing three runs on five hits in four innings.
In the nightcap, it was Millersville's turn to rally late. Trailing 3-1 in the top of the seventh, King drew a walk, and
Mike August doubled to put two runners in scoring position. Freshman
David Pine pushed home King with a RBI ground out, cutting the IUP lead to 3-2. The next batter,
Carlos Medina, came through with a RBI double to left, knotting the game at 3-3 and sending it into extras.
Both bullpens were stout for the first three extra innings. Millersville's
Jason Long hurled three no-hit innings and was in position to get the save when in the 10th,
Ryan Cannistraci singled home Edgar, who had doubled earlier in the inning. Cannistraci's single put the Marauders on top, 4-3.
The ball was handed to reliever
Tyler Horst in the bottom of the inning. Entering the game, he was a perfect 4-for-4 in save opportunities. After striking out the leadoff batter, everything started to unravel.
Lupia singled and Troy Foster was hit by a pitch. Horst notched the second out with another strike out, but Austin Mock drew a walk to load the bases. Mike Lupia recorded an infield single, tying the game at 4-4 and keeping the bases loaded for Robbie Zinsmeister. Zinsmeister picked up an easy, game-winning RBI when Horst plunked him with a pitch.
The Marauder bullpen allowed just one hit and no runs for six innings before IUP's 10th-inning rally. Freshman
Josh Mellon made his career debut, surrendering one hit from the fourth through the sixth. IUP's Brett Quiggle (1-1) notched the win after pitching 5.1 innings in relief.
Sunday's losses brings Millersville's total of one-run losses to 11.
The Marauders, now having played six games in three days, travel to Philadelphia University for a nine-inning affair on Tuesday.
