Early Lead Doesn't Hold Up For Marauders at Philadelphia U.

Box Score

Philadelphia, Pa. - Millersville led homestanding Philadelphia U. 3-0 after two innings, but that early lead faded, and the Marauders fell 7-6 for their third loss in the last four games.

Philadelphia (3-5) roughed up Millersville's (6-4) pitching for 16 hits--the most against the Marauders since April 23, 2010. Six different Rams had at least two hits.

The Marauders took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second on RBI singles from Kurt Seiders, Evan King and Mike August. The Rams answered back in the third with two runs on two hits and a Marauder fielding error.

Starter Mark Royer exited after the first batter of the fourth inning doubled. he allowed three runs on six hits and two walks, but reliever Adam Zipko couldn't keep the Rams off the board. He allowed the inherited runner to score on a double from Rick Reigner. The Rams finished with two runs in the inning to take a 4-3 lead.

The Marauders took the advantage back in the fifth. Dan Johnson doubled, and Mike Perez was hit by a pitch. Jeff Heisey singled to plate Johnson, and Perez later scored on Seiders' second RBI single of the game.

The 5-4 lead would not hold, though. In the bottom of the sixth, the Rams tagged Tad Barton (0-1) for three runs on five hits. Trailing 7-5 in the seventh, Millersville picked up one on an Ram error. It wasn't enough, though, and Millersville could not crack Joseph Capparelli (1-1). Capparelli earned the win after allowing four hits and no earned runs in 4.1 innings.

The loss was the first of Barton's career after winning his first six decisions.

Millersville hosts Clarion for its home opener Friday. The doubleheader starts at 1 p.m.
