Game 2
Millersville, Pa. - Defense can make all the difference. That was certainly the case in Friday's game two between Millersville and Kutztown. While the Golden Bears committed two costly fielding errors in the outfield that led to Millersville runs, Marauder third baseman
Tyler McDonald made a diving snare for the final out of the game that clinched a 3-2 win and a much-needed doubleheader sweep. Millersville won the opener by a 4-2 score.
Millersville (16-14, 4-8 PSAC East) desperately needed two wins Saturday over No. 18 Kutztown (20-8, 8-4 PSAC East), which swept the Marauders on Friday. A four-run fifth was the difference for Millersville in game one as it rallied from a 2-0 deficit. In game two, the margin of victory was all but a couple of inches.
Kutztown took a lead in the second inning off of an Andrew Otterberg solo homer, but Millersville tied it in the second with a little help from the Golden Bears. McDonald drew a one-out walk, and
David Pine followed with a single to right. The right fielder charged the ball and it skipped under his glove, putting McDonald on third.
Jeff Heisey pushed the run home with a perfectly executed squeeze play.
The Marauders added two more in the third. With two runners on base,
Kurt Seiders singled to center, and once again, the Kutztown fielder had trouble fielding the ball. The booted ball allowed an extra run to score, pushing Millersville's lead to 3-1.
Kutztown's Shayne Houck ripped a solo homer in the sixth off of starter
Tim Mayza (2-1) to cut into the lead, and in the seventh, with
Tyler Horst trying to nail down his second save of the day, Kutztown drew two walks. A fielder's choice put runners on the corners with two outs. Sean McCormick, brother of former Marauder second baseman
Ryan McCormick, ripped the first pitch of the at bat into the hole between third and short. McDonald dove to the ground, catching the ball on one skip. He lept to his feet and fired a strike to first base to end Kutztown's threat.
Mayza picked up the win after allowing the two solo homers and six hits in five innings.
Adam Zipko pitched a scoreless inning, and Horst notched his third save of the season.
Dan Johnson led Millersville with three hits at the plate.
Game one starter
Mike McMonagle wasn't as fortunate in terms of runs support. He allowed two runs before exiting with two outs in the fifth. The Marauders trailed 2-0 at that point, though. In the bottom of the inning,
Evan King started a rally with a one-out triple to left center. Edgar followed with an opposite field double that skipped down the left field line.
Zach Stone was hit by a pitch, putting two runners on base. Johnson lined a single to left, tying the game at two. Seiders then hit a blooper that landed in no-mans land in right center. It was good enough to drive in Stone. Johnson scored later on a wild pitch. That 4-2 lead was all the Marauder bullpen needed.
Jason Long (1-2), Zipko and Horst blanked Kutztown over the final three frames.
All of Millersville's runs came off of reliever Connor Wing (2-1), who had entered in the inning after Tom Neely threw four shutout innings.
McDonald and Heisey both had two hits for the Marauders.
Millersville improved to 7-2 at home and 12-6 overall against Kutztown since
Jon Shehan became head coach in 2008.
The Marauders were originally scheduled to play Philadelphia at home on Sunday, but that game was canceled. Millersville now travels to Wilmington Tuesday for a nine-inning game.
