Marauders Drop Both Games at Georgian Court

Game 1 Box | Game 2 Box

Lakewood, N.J. – Millersville softball traveled Georgian Court Wednesday looking to continue its winning ways, as the team had won eight of its past 11 games. The Lions, however, stopped the Marauders dead in their tracks, sweeping the doubleheader by scores of 4-0 and 9-4 respectively.

After four-straight stellar outings, Sarah Bertoni took the loss for Millersville in the first game, dropping her record to 4-8. The freshman surrendered four runs (zero earned) in a complete game effort. Bertoni allowed five hits, walked one and struck out five but was undone by three Marauder fielding errors.

The Lions did all of their damage against Bertoni in the bottom of the second inning, scoring all four runs on three hits and three Marauder errors. Brooke Hull shut down the Millersville bats as the team managed just two hits, one each from Bertoni and designated hitter Alexandra Hoops.

Millersville jumped out to a lead in game two, capitalizing on a Georgian Court error. Bertoni, batting as the designated hitter in the second game, came around to score when Taylor Odell-Smith reached on an error in the top of the second.

After the Lions clawed back to score a run in the bottom half of the inning, Ally Homa again gave Millersville the lead after leading off the inning with a double. Homa reached home plate on a RBI single by starting pitcher Ashley Cantiello.

After falling behind, the Lions flipped a switch and got to Cantiello, scoring six unanswered runs over the next two innings on the strength of seven hits and one Marauder error. In the five-run fourth inning, the Lions were propelled by a two-run home run off the bat of Jennifer Tartaglia.

The Marauders got a run back in the next half-inning on a solo shot to dead center by Homa. The lone Millersville senior paced the offense in this game, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored. The Lions put two more runs on the board in bottom of the sixth, increasing the lead to 9-3.

Millersville had one final stand in the top of the seventh after the first three batters of the inning reached base. The Marauders, however, would push just one run across in the inning, leaving the bases packed full of Marauders to end the threat.

The losses drop the Marauders to 9-17 on the season and marks the first time the team has been on a losing streak of any length since March 15. The team is back on the diamond in a PSAC clash with Central Division foe Lock Haven Saturday in a doubleheader. The Bald Eagles currently hold an 11-9 record and are 1-1 in conference play.
