Box Score

Murfreesboro, N.C. - Dan Johnson and Evan King stayed white-hot at the plate, and Pat Kelley, making the first start of his collegiate career, pitched six shutout innings to lead the Millersville baseball team to an 8-1 win at Chowan Wednesday.

Entering Wednesday, Kelley had made three appearances and pitched a total of five innings in his Millersville career. He delivered a much-needed quality start for the Marauders (10-6), blanking Chowan (13-15) while allowing four hits and three walks and striking out three in six innings.

With King setting the table, and Johnson driving in runs, Chowan starter Tyler Ross (0-5) was doomed for a rough outing. The Marauders jumped on Chowan for two runs in the first and four runs in the third. Ross exited after allowing eight runs--seven earned--on nine hits and six walks in six innings.

King went 2-for-4 with a walk, steal and three runs scored. Johnson went 2-for-3 with two doubles and three RBIs. Zach Stone walked twice, scored three times and hit his team-leading third homer of the season.

Over his last four games, King is 8-for-14 with four RBIs, five walks and eight runs scored. Johnson is 7-for-12 with four RBIs in his last three games.

As the team's leadoff hitter, King did his job in the first inning, hitting a double. Two batters later, Johnson drove him in with a sacrifice fly. Stone later scored from third when Mike August swiped second.

Kelley stranded three runners on base in the first two runners, and then settled in during the third inning. He retired nine consecutive batters over the following three-plus innings.

King jump-started the Marauders again in the fourth with a lead-off single. With the bases loaded, Johnson ripped a two-run single. Freshman David Pine came through with his first career hit and first career RBI later in the inning, and Kurt Seiders improved to 6-for-13 in his last four games with a RBI single of his own.

Millersville now turns its attention to its PSAC Eastern Division title defense, which begins Friday at home against Bloomsburg. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
