Box Score West Chester, Pa. – Millersville drained 3 after 3 to open Saturday's game at West Chester and took a decisive 19-point lead into the break. The Golden Rams tried to mimic Bloomsburg's second half efforts from three days ago, but the Marauders held on for a 69-68 win to split the season series.
West Chester (15-5, 11-5 PSAC) outscored Millersville (13-7, 10-6 PSAC) in the second half by a margin of 43-27 to cut the Marauders' lead to 69-66 with 50 seconds remaining. It was the Golden Rams' first lead since the 16:01 mark of the first half. West Chester's Allison Hostetter, who struggled early on, drained what was her only made 3-pointer to bring the Golden Rams within three.
Millersville turned the ball over with 14 seconds remaining to give West Chester a chance to take the game into overtime. The Marauders finished the game with 26 turnovers, 15 in the second half.
The Marauders covered the perimeter to deny West Chester an easy look at the basket. With less than five second left, Hostettler dished it to Meghan Kerrigan who swished a two-point jumper as the clock expired giving Millersville the 69-68 win.
West Chester jumped out to a 9-3 lead in the first half before Millersville got hot from behind the arc. The Marauders made five of its first six 3-pointers, three coming from redshirt freshman
Carly Gallagher. Gallagher led all scorers at the break with 12 points.
The Marauders stormed off the court with an impressive 42-23 lead at the break, much like they did against Bloomsburg on Wednesday. Millersville shot 49 percent from the field, including 39 percent from behind the arc. More importantly, the Marauders drained all five of their free throws.
In the second half it was all West Chester. The Golden Rams cut the Millersville lead to eight points with 15:18 remaining. West Chester made seven of its first 10 shots in the half. Hostetter, Alex Lennon and Ambreeline Ortman all stepped up in the second half after struggling in the first. Lennon finished with a game-high 19 points, while Hostetter added 13 points with eight assists. Ortman led the Golden Rams with nine boards, while adding 18 points of her own.
For Millersville, it was
Aurielle Mosley collecting her 13th double-double of the season with a team-high 18 points and 14 rebounds. Mosley collected 10 of her points from the free throw line. The Marauders went 18-for-26 from the charity stripe to better their 6-for-13 showing in the 61-59 loss to West Chester on Jan. 14.
Gallagher also finished with 18 points with three 3-pointers and going 5-for-5 from the foul line.
Junior
Miesha Cousins had career day for the Marauders. In 19 minutes, Cousins went 5-of-6 from the field for 10 points—both career highs. Four of Cousins' points came on fast breaks after creating two turnovers by the Golden Rams.
Mashira Newman added 12 points to increase her career point total to 1,015, which moves Newman past two more former Marauders and into 16th all time.
Millersville gets a three-day rest before it hosts Cheyney on Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 6 p.m. The Marauders defeated the Wolves 66-49 on Jan. 16.
