Baseball Stays Perfect in Williamston

 vs. Fairmont Statevs. Glenville State

Williamston, N.C. - Millersville baseball improved to 5-1 on the season and 9-0 all-time in Williamston, N.C. by sweeping Fairmont State and Glenville State Saturday evening and early Sunday morning.

After the Marauders downed Fairmont State 4-1, game two against Glenville State, which had been originally scheduled for Friday but had been pushed back because of weather, started at 10:45 p.m. Saturday evening. The Marauders led the first-year program 1-0 early and the Pioneers tied the game on Steve Miller's RBI double in the fifth.

But when the calendar flipped from Feb. 25 to Feb. 26, the Marauder offense started to click. Marauder baserunners Evan King and Mike August started the rally. King drew a walk then swiped both second and third. August walked and when he stole second, the throw down skipped away into the outfield, allowing King to give Millersville a 2-1 lead. August took third immediately after and the throw down got past the third baseman, which allowed August to race home for a 3-1 Marauder lead.

Millersville added two more unearned run in the sixth and at that point, Millersville had just two hits off of freshman starter Ian Morris. In the seventh, though, Tyler McDonald ripped a bases-clearing double to left-center, giving Millersville a sizable 8-1 lead. It was the first hit of McDonald's career.

Morris was saddled with the loss after giving up six runs on three hits and six walks. Only one of the runs was earned, though. Tim Mayza (1-0) earned the win for Millersville after allowing one run on three hits and one walk in five innings. Tad Barton qualified for the save with four shutout innings. The final out of the game was recorded at 1:45 a.m.

In the first game of the evening, Millersville rode the arm of Brooks Rothschild (2-0) to a win over Fairmont State (0-4). Rothschild allowed just one run on two hits and four walks while striking out nine over six innings. Brian Black threw three shutout innings in relief.

King was the spark plug for the Millersville offense. He went 3-for-4 with a walk, stole two bags and scored a run. Chris Edgar scored two runs. Millersville totaled nine hits as a team.

The Marauders have now outscored opponents 102-5 in nine games in Williamston. Sunday's game against Seton Hill will most certainly be a stiff challenge for Millersville, though. Seton Hill won each of its first two games at Williamston in 2012. Millersville defeated Seton Hill 5-3 in the NCAA Atlantic Regional in 2011. First pitch is 2 p.m. Live audio can be heard on MSBN's iTunes and Winamp feed.
