New York City, NY – In the first day of back-to-back competitions on Friday, the Marauders track & field teams competed in the Lafayette Rider Winter Games, run at The Armory in New York City. The Winter Games saw five total Millersville athletes win their heat and six qualify for the PSAC Indoor Championships.
Chris Jackson Jr., Thomas Wexler, Zach Kohler, Harlee Staller and Chrissy Savage all took first in their respective competitions. For the men's team, Jackson placed first in his heat and 12th overall in the 400-meter dash with a time of 51.89 seconds. His time is just shy of Keith Ogden's team season-best 51.13 seconds. The time is also a personal best for Jackson and a PSAC Championship qualifying time.
Wexler, who competed in two events, placed first in his heat (13th overall) with a time of 23.40 in the 200-meter dash, marking a personal best for him in the event and a PSAC-qualifying time. The Egg Harbor Township native also ran the 60-meter dash in a time of 7.35 seconds, one-hundredth of a second over his personal best of 7.34 set in the 2010-11 indoor season. The sophomore's 7.35-second finish was good for second in his heat and 10th overall in the event.
Kohler was the busiest of the day for the Marauders, competing in three events. The versatile senior placed first in his heat and fourth overall in the long jump with a 6.39-meter distance. That distance is a personal best for Kohler, as well as a season-best for Millersville.
Kohler also notched two second-place finishes, in both the 60-meter hurdles and the high jump. Kohler's 60-meter hurdles time was 8.89 seconds. Like Wexler in the 60-meter dash, Kohler just missed his personal best in the event, as he marked an 8.88-second finish two weeks ago at the Bison Open, which qualified him for PSAC competition. The 1.93-meter high jump was his second-best finish of the season, falling short of the 1.98-meter finish he also posted two weeks ago and qualified him for PSACs in that event.
Justin Berg and Sergey Grinev also competed for the men's team, posting a pair of fourth-place finishes in their respective events. Berg posted a 12.45-meter weight throw, for his third-best result of the season. Grinev, who ran the 800-meter dash for the first time in his career, posted a time of 2:00.74, good for the second-best finish by a Marauder in that event all season. That run also qualified Grinev for the PSAC Indoor Championships.
On the women's side, the Marauders had four athletes in competition. Harlee Staller, who competed in two events, logged a first-place finish in her heat for the 60-meter dash. Normally a jumper, Staller ran the 60-meter in 8.03 seconds, which gave her a fourth-place finish overall and the best time by a Marauder woman in the event all season.
She bested Katherine Lennex's Lehigh time of 8.27 seconds. That finish also qualified her for the PSAC Championships. Staller's other event, the triple jump, did not end as well as her 60-meter dash. The Annville native fouled her attempt and did not record a finishing distance.
Savage ran her 200-meter dash in 26.77 seconds, tops in her heat and 11th overall. Her time qualified her for a spot in the PSAC Indoor Championships and topped her Marauder season-best finish of 27.01 seconds in the Bison Open.
Also competing for the women were Ann Kovacs and Becky Novak. Kovacs posted an 11.84-meter weight throw, the fourth-best of the freshman's career. It placed her second in her heat and eighth overall. Novak, who ran the 400-meter dash in 1:00.43, also placed second in her heat and sixth overall. Novak's finish qualified her for the PSAC Indoor Championships.
The Marauders are in action again today at Bucknell at the Bucknell Winter Classic.
