Newman Reaches 1,000 in Marauders’ Loss to Bloomsburg

Box Score Millersville, Pa. – The Millersville women's basketball team played a near perfect first half, but Bloomsburg played an even better second half to leave Pucillo Gymnasium with a 77-33 win on Wednesday evening.

Redshirt junior Mashira Newman entered tonight's game needing 17 points to reach the 1,000-point milestone. With 1:36 remaining in regulation and 16 points on the board, Newman was fouled and sent to the line for two. Newman sunk the first foul shot to become just the 18th player in Millersville women's basketball history to have 1,000 points in her career.

Bloomsburg (17-4, 11-4 PSAC), which trailed by 21 at halftime, opened the second half on a 20-9 run to cut Millersville's (12-7, 9-6) lead to 49-41 with 11:42 remaining. The Huskies committed just three turnovers in the second half after turning the ball over 19 times in the first.

Millersville was able to maintain its lead until 3:43 left in regulation when the Huskies' Alyssa Flanagan hit a jumper to give Bloomsburg its first lead of the game at 63-62. Aurielle Mosley made good on two free throws on Millersville's next possession to give the Marauders a 64-63 edge.

Bloomsburg's Kayla Oxenrider hit her first of two late 3-pointers to give the Huskies a 66-64 lead with 3:03 remaining. Oxenrider finished with a game-high 23 points.

With 1:05 remaining Newman hit a 3 to bring the Marauders within a point of Bloomsburg, down 71-70. The teams then exchanged 3-pointers to give the Huskies a 74-73 lead with 29 seconds remaining. Millersville missed its final two shots, while Bloomsburg made good on three free throws to complete the second-half comeback over the Marauders, 77-73.

The Huskies scored 56 points in the second half after mustering just 21 in the first. Bloomsburg hit 7-of-11 3-pointers in the second, while going 0-for-2 in the first half.

Newman and Mosley both finished with 20 points. Mosley also collected 10 rebounds to earn her 11th double-double of the season. Newman now has 1,003 career points ranking her 18th all time.

Bloomsburg's Kelsey Gallagher got the better of the Gallagher sisters. Kelsey finished with 18 points, while Carly Gallagher collected 11 points for the Marauders.

Bloomsburg has now won three-straight games against Millersville after losing nine straight.

Millersville travels to West Chester on Saturday, Feb. 4 for a rematch with the Golden Rams. The Marauders and West Chester tip at 2 p.m.
