Box Score Millersville, Pa. – Tuesday night represented another tough test on the schedule for the women's basketball team with No. 8 Gannon coming to town on the strength of a seven-game win streak. Unfortunately for the Marauders, they weren't able to snap the Golden Knights' string of success, falling in overtime by a final of 78-76.
The loss is the first of the season for Millersville, which drops to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in PSAC play, and ruins the Marauders' best start since 2009-10. That team won seven consecutive games to open the season.
Carly Gallagher led the team with 22 points in the loss.
Millersville was not without its chances to win against the eighth-best team in the country. The home team had a chance to win on a
Senada Mehmedovic 3-pointer with about 13 seconds left and the score tied at 69, but her attempt couldn't find the net, sending the game to an extra period.
In the overtime, the Marauders took the lead 72-69 in scoring the first three points. From there, Gannon outscored Millersville 9-4 to steal a win at Pucillo for the Golden Knights' fourth straight victory in the all-time series between the two teams.
One hurdle Millersville couldn't clear in Tuesday's game was free throw shooting. While Gannon made 18 of its 23 attempts from the charity strip, the Marauders shot just 53.1 percent (17-of-32) from the line. Bench points also proved vital, with a 24-2 edge going to visiting Gannon.
One final measure that doomed Millersville in its first defeat of the season was second-chance points. The Marauders pulled 21 offensive rebounds, but were only able to come away with 16 second-chance points.
Despite the loss, the Marauders had three players in double figures, paced by Gallagher's 22.
Aurielle Mosley poured in 21 points to go along with nine boards, two blocks and a steal. The two blocks put her at 199 for her career, which is just two shy of breaking the school record in a career.
Mashira Newman was the other player to post double digits in points for the Marauders, giving Millersville 15 points, eight rebounds, six assists five blocks and two steals. The five blocks were a career-high for the senior. One other player who had significant contributions in defeat was fellow senior
Miesha Cousins, who tallied nine points, 11 rebounds and two blocks.
Gannon's win leaves the Golden Knights as the final unbeaten team in PSAC play, holding a 4-0 record in conference games. Jen Papich and Brittany Batts shared the team lead with 16 points apiece and Mollie Sebald chipped in 15 off the bench to spark the second unit.
The Marauders are right back at it tomorrow against a Mercyhurst squad that entered tonight with a 2-3 record (2-1 PSAC). The Lakers were on the road at Shippensburg, and had beaten both of their PSAC East opponents so far this season. Millersville is, however, 4-1 all-time against Mercyhurst. Tip for tomorrow's game from Pucillo is slated for 5:30 p.m.
