Shippensburg, Pa. - It was a historic night in Heiges Field House as Millersville and Shippensburg opened the first PSAC regular season schedule. The homestanding Red Raiders built a large enough lead early that a late Marauder comeback fell short, 23-18.
Millersville (0-1) won the last three matches of the dual, and while it needed back-to-back pins from
Joel Suter at 197 pounds and
Brad Ladd at heavyweight, the two won with decisions, leaving Millersville five points shy of the Red Raiders.
With five PSAC teams competing at the Division II level for the first time, the 2012 season features a round robin schedule with the team at the top of the standings winning the PSAC team championship.
Shippensburg (2-2) opened with three consecutive wins from 125 pounds through 141 pounds, building a 14-0 lead with a pair of major decisions and a pin.
Josh Ruppert, wrestling at 149 pounds, scored Millersville's first points, pinning Mark Lentz in just 23 seconds.
Ship won the next three bouts by decision, putting the Marauders in a 23-6 hole. 184-pound
Daniel Cox kept the Marauders' hopes alive with a pin of Joe Piro at the 3:54 mark. Suter topped Francis Slover by a 7-3 score, and Ladd scored an 8-1 decision over Daniel Fultz.
Millersville competes in the New Standard Invitational in York, Pa., on Dec. 1.
