Box Score Kutztown, Pa. - After not beating Kutztown in 18 straight tries the Millersville field hockey team has now beaten the Golden Bears twice in a row after
Paige Morrison knocked in an overtime goal to help the Marauders win on the road Saturday by a 4-3 score.
Millersville (9-5, 4-2 PSAC East) received goals from Morrison,
Katelyn Zapp, and
Champayne Hess. Morrison tallied two goals in the game to double her season total. Goalkeeper
Lauren Sotzin played well for the Marauders and totaled six saves agianst the Bears.
Kutztown (4-9, 1-5 PSAC East), trailing at halftime, collected second half goals from Erin Reynolds and Anna Behm. The Bears remained close throughout the game thanks to the play of keeper Karly Waltman. Waltman saved a season-high 16 shots for Kutztown.
Millersville wasted no time scoring as it jumped out to the earliest lead its had all season when Zapp tallied her goal just 90 seconds into the contest.
After a Kutztown score, Morrison recieved a pass from
Rachel Dickinson on the left side and easily tapped the ball into the net for a 2-1 Marauder advantage.
Hess scored her goal on a similar play with 10 minutes left in the first half. This time it was
Brittany Troutman who fed Hess the ball from the right side, and Hess finished to the left corner of the cage, putting Millersville up 3-1 at the break.
The Bears began their rally five minutes into the second frame when a deflected shot by Reynolds found its way into the back of the cage, cutting Millersville's lead to one. With 13 minutes left in regulation Kutztown would score again when Behm tapped in the equalizer and knot the game at three.
Millersville stopped two last-second corners by the Bears in regulation to force overtime.
Fresh off of an overtime victory against East Stroudsburg, the Marauders followed their strategy in that contest and took advantage of their early opportunity. Five minutes into the extra period Zapp fired a shot at the cage. Morrison redirected the shot and beat Waltman to complete the 4-3 Millersville win.
The Marauders took a season-high 29 shots in the game. Troutman, Zapp, and
Samantha Ruane led the way, each with five.
The win ensures Millersville of its first .500 record since 1998, and its four league wins are the most since the same season. Millersville had also not defeated Kutztown in back-to-back games since the 1995-96 seasons.
Millersville travels to Bloomsburg on Tuesday Oct. 9 to try to avenge a 1-0 overtime loss to the Huskies earlier in the year. Game time is 6 p.m.
