Box Score Millersville, Pa. - The Millersville field hockey team could not score in 70 minutes of regulation, but needed fewer than two minutes to score the game-winning goal in overtime. Senior
Ashley Weber knocked in a pass from
Sarah Bomberger at the 1:56 mark in overtime to lift Millersville past East Stroudsburg and to its third win in four games.
Millersville improved to 8-5 overall and to 3-2 in the PSAC East, matching the most league wins in a season since 2004 with still five games to play. East Stroudsburg (4-8, 0-5 PSAC East) received eight saves from goalkeeper Sarah Dobroskey and was led on offense by Ally Roth and Mallory Pope, each with three shots.
Both teams had plenty of opportunities to score in the first half but neither could solve the other team's defense. The Warriors held a slight 9-8 advantage in shots in the first frame with the Marauders holding an 8-6 lead in penalty corners.
The second half was a different story. Millersville out-shot East Stroudsburg 12-2 and took one more penalty corner. However, the Marauders could not capitilize on their scoring chances.
The Marauders best scoring threat came with four minutes remaining in regulation.
Rachel Dickinson fired a shot from 12 yards out and Dobrosky made the save but popped the rebound high in the air. Senior
Paige Morrison followed the rebound but her shot sailed wide left as Millersville remained scoreless.
The overtime period ended almost as quickly as it began. After a short ESU threat, Dickinson countered and created a 3-on-2 opportunity for Millersville. The ball was eventually played to Bomberger at the top left of the circle. She fired a pass to the back right corner where Weber was waiting. Weber tapped in the game-winner--her fourth goal of the year.
With the win Millersville wins its eighth game on the season, a feat it has only accomplished three times since 2000.
The Marauders travel to Kutztown on Saturday, Oct. 6 to take on the Golden Bears after defeating them 3-0 for the first time in a decade in the first meeting this season. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
