Millersville, Pa. – After storming out of the gates to take a 2-0 lead against West Chester Saturday, the Marauders looked to be in control of their crucial PSAC East showdown with the Golden Rams. West Chester, however, had other plans, and rallied to stun Millersville on its home floor, 3-2.
Millersville jumped out to the lead courtesy of first and second set wins of 27-25 and 25-19, respectively. From there, West Chester took the third set by a score of 25-13, claimed the fourth set by a 25-16 margin and used the momentum from consecutive-set victories to clinch the fifth set, 15-13.
Katie Lesinski led the team in kills for the 10th straight match with 14. Saturday's match marked four of the past five in which Lesinski has netted double-digit kills. Kayla Wallace added 13 kills behind Lesinski on .323 hitting. Those two combined for just seven errors out of 67 attempts.
The efforts of Lesinski and Wallace on the offensive end were not enough to withstand the Golden Rams, however, as the visiting team hit .245 on its own offensive end. Millersville's defense did manage 68 digs with a team-leading 13 from Brooklyn Smith and blocked seven kill attempts in total, led by five from Lesinski (all assists).
One other strong performer for the Marauders was Jessica Franz, who posted 44 assists and 10 digs for her ninth double-double of the year. Franz had five kills on .364 hitting, an ace and a block assist to round out her strong day on the court. Before the match, Millersville honored Sue Caramanico for Senior Day. The Marauders' lone senior had an ace and eight digs for the match.
Millersville has short time to put the tough loss behind the team. The Marauders host Shippensburg Tuesday at home in another important PSAC East battle at Pucillo Gymnasium. On Sept. 25, the Red Raiders handed Millersville its first PSAC East loss of the year, 3-0. Tuesday night's match begins at 7 p.m.
