Millersville, Pa. – Going into Saturday's PSAC Championship at Slippery Rock University, the Millersville women's cross country team can hang its hat on five top-three finishes as a team in program history in the race. Even though the team doesn't know where it can expect to finish Saturday, head coach Andy Young expressed optimism due to the team's youth.
Even though the team has nine freshmen on its 14-woman roster, this year, the team has been paced by senior Sarah Mulvey, who has placed first among all Marauder runners in four of six races this fall. “The person that's really made a big leap this season is Sarah Mulvey,” said Young. “She had a big breakout race this past weekend out at Gettysburg, which was exciting for her and for us to see.”
The Gettysburg Invitational produced Mulvey's best time of her career (22:59) and the ninth-fastest in school history, as well as the best time by a Marauder in a 6K race this season. Mulvey's coach believes she has a shot to be an All-Conference runner, which would mean a top-20 finish at the PSAC Championships.
Young knows that the race will provide the young members of the team with valuable experience, and is hoping a few freshmen will step up and make an impact at the Championships, namely freshman Elizabeth Reese, who had a season- and career-best finish of 23:27 in the Gettysburg Invitational. “We'd love to see Elizabeth Reese step up big in this meet this weekend,” Young said.
One other senior member of the team hoping to finish her career strong is Mallory Austin, who is playing a leadership role on the team. “We have such a young team, mostly freshmen and only a few upperclassmen,” Austin said. “So I've been trying to motivate them, keep them positive, show them through our runs, help them through routines and help them get ready for PSACs this weekend.”
Austin believes this young team is on a mission to prove itself to the rest of the conference as well at the PSAC Championships, saying, “We've been showing lots of personal records and improvements so we just want to show the other teams what we've got.”
With two individual PSAC Championships to the team's credit in 1990 (Kellie Boozer) and 1995 (Jo Rupp), the Marauders are hoping this weekend's race is a stepping stone to not only success in this year's PSAC Championship, but also for future years.
