Field Hockey Clinches PSAC Playoff Berth With Win Over LIU Post

Box Score Brookville, N.Y. - The wait is over for Millersville field hockey. With Ashley Weber's second half goal, the Marauders earned a 1-0 win over LIU Post Tuesday afternoon and ended a 19-year hiatus from the PSAC Tournament.

Millersville (11-6, 6-3 PSAC East) needed just one more victory in its final two games or an LIU Post (7-9, 3-6 PSAC East) loss to guarantee a trip to the conference playoffs for the first time since 1993. The Marauders took care of both scenarios Tuesday, and they did it in the same fashion they have all season: stout defense, stellar goalkeeping and timely scoring.

Millersville improved to 7-3 in one-goal games and won its sixth consecutive game that was decided by just one goal. The offense totaled only seven shots including four on goal, but the Marauders only needed one to win the game.

Just 2:49 into the second half, Weber put a shot and goal that was saved by LIU Post's Becca May. She won a scramble in front of the goal and put rebound past May for her team-leading fifth of the season.

LIU Post dominated early, out-shooting the Marauders 6-1 in the first 35 minutes. Millersville flipped the script in the second half, and the defense made goalkeeper Lauren Sotzin's job much easier. Sotzin turned away two shots in the first half but did not face a shot on goal in the second. It was her eighth shutout of the season, which brings her within one of the school record set by Angela Lutz in 1992.

Brittany Troutman, Champayne Hess and Katelynn Zapp accounted for Millersville's other three shots.

The Marauders can now position themselves for a first round home game in the PSAC Tournament. Millersville, at 6-3 must beat East Stroudsburg on Oct. 20 and wait to see what Bloomsburg does in its final two games against Kutztown and LIU Post. West Chester, currently at 7-1, has the upperhand in tiebreakers with both Millersville and Bloomsburg.
