No. 2 West Chester Denies No. 6 Marauders

Box Score Millersville, Pa. - Millersville field hockey's bid for the postseason was delayed Saturday when PSAC East front-running West Chester scored two early goals and held on to defeat the Marauders 2-0 on Senior Day.

No. 2 West Chester (12-2, 7-1 PSAC East) was stifling defensively, holding the No. 6 Marauders (10-6, 5-3 PSAC East) to just three shots and kept the scoring opportunities to minimum. Golden Ram goalkeeper Kristin Arnold did not have to make a save.

Any momentum that Millersville carried into Saturday's game from Tuesday's overtime win over Bloomsburg was quickly halted when the Golden Rams opened the scoring seven minutes into the game. Abbey Hordendorf rifled a shot from outside the circle that was collected and redirected by Alexis Versak.

The Golden Rams increased the lead just 3:15 before the halftime clock expired on a tremendous effort from Kayla Gluchowski. Michele Schrift cranked a shot from well outside the circle on the right side. A running Gluchowski dove headfirst and with her stick outstretched, she redirected Schrift's pass past Lauren Sotzin.

Millersville controlled possession for the majority of the second half but managed only a couple of quality looks at the goal. With just under five minutes left, Brittany Troutman pushed a shot wide off of a Sarah Bomberger penalty corner. In the final minute, Katelyn Zapp took a shot that sailed just wide of the cage.

West Chester totaled 15 shots to Millersville's three and totaled 13 penalty corners to Millersville's one.

The loss ended Millersville's three-game win streak. It also makes the Oct. 16 game at LIU Post even more critical. The Marauders can clinch their first spot in the PSAC Tournament since 1993 with a win. Game time 4 p.m.

Saturday was also the final home game in the careers of six Marauder seniors. Brittany Anderson, Kirsten Dively, Emily Manwiller, Paige Morrison, Maria Thompson and Ashley Weber were the first recruiting class for coach Shelly Behrens. The class has helped the Marauders to its first winning season since 1998 and with 35 wins, it is the most successful four-year group since 1999.
