Kutztown, Pa. – In the first competition since the New Year, the Millersville men and women's track & field teams put together a strong showing at the Kutztown Golden Bear Open and Multis on Friday. Six events saw Marauders finish in either first or second place.
Harlee Staller, who won the long jump with a distance of 5.41 meters, sparked the Marauder women. Staller's win was the only first-place finish of the day for Millersville and the first win of her career, even though she set the school record with a distance of 5.51 meters at Lehigh on Dec. 2. That distance was good enough for a second-place finish.
Staller wasn't the only member of the women's team that performed well. Teammate Katherine Lennex finished with a 4.87-meter distance in the long jump, placing fourth. Lennex also placed fourth in the triple jump, with a distance of 10.12 meters. In her third event, Lennex qualified for the finals of the 55-meter dash by winning her heat in the preliminaries but placed fifth with a final time of 7.63 seconds.
Taking second in the triple jump two spots ahead of Lennex was Whitney Savoy, who logged a 10.36-meter jump, .04 meters behind the winner. Chrissy Savage and Becky Novak were also second-place finishers for the Marauders in the 200- and 400-meter dash, respectively. Savage's second place came with a time of 27.66 seconds--the best time posted for the women in that event so far this year. Novak's time of 1:03.90 gave her a second place finish.
On the men's side, the standout performance went to Zach Kohler, who finished second in the heptathlon with 3,862 points. Kohler won or placed second in three of the seven events: the long jump (6.03 meters, won) and high jump (1.85 meters, won) and the pole vault (3.20 meters, second).
Another big performer for the men's team was Keith Ogden Jr., who placed second with a 6.58-second sprint in the 55-meter dash. Ogden won his preliminary heat with a 6.65-second qualifying time. He also placed fourth in the 400-meter dash, clocking in at 51.13 seconds--the best time posted by a Marauder in that event all season.
One other solid finisher for the men was Anthony Adamski. Adamski placed second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.49. The second place finish was Adamski's highest place in any event this season so far.
The Marauders have a couple weeks off before their next competition to rest. Part of the team will travel to the PSU Open on Jan. 27-28, while the rest of the team will compete in the Bison Open & Multi at Bucknell on the same days.
