West Chester Clips Marauders in PSAC East Opener

Box Score Millersville, Pa. - Down-to-the-wire games between Millersville and West Chester women's basketball has become a given in recent years. On Saturday at Pucillo Gymnasium West Chester used its free throw shooting to nip a late-charging Marauder squad, 61-59.

Millersville (8-5, 5-4 PSAC) held West Chester (10-3, 7-3 PSAC) to 30.6 shooting from the field, but the stout defensive effort was enough as the Golden Rams sank 17-of-21 from the free throw line. The Marauders made just 6-of-13 from the line.

The Marauders raced in front 17-8 to start the game, but scored just six points over the next 10 minutes, and West Chester built a 35-24 advantage at the break. And even though the Marauder defense forced West Chester to miss 19 of its first 20 shots of the second half, they couldn't close the gap.

West Chester's struggles from the field didn't carry over to the free throw line as it sank 12-of-12 to start the second.

Millersville used a 12-4 run that started with an Aurielle Mosley with 3:44 to go and ended with a Mashira Newman 3-pointer with 34 seconds left to pull with 59-57. West Chester's Alex Lennon was fouled with with 16 ticks to go and calmly hit both to push the advantage back to four.

Millersville raced ahead and Sophia Waters scored two with five seconds left. Waters broke up the ensuing in-bounds pass and it was kicked out of bounds by West Chester, giving the Marauders the ball with two seconds left and nearly the full length of the floor to go. Mashira Newman's half-court heave was too strong.

Four Marauders scored in double figures. Newman led the way with 16 points, five assists and four steals. Mosley registered her ninth double-double of the season with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Waters and Gallagher added 12 and 11 points respectively.

West Chester was led by Ambreelinne Ortman's 14 points.

The Marauders travel to Cheyney on Monday afternoon for a 1 p.m. tip. Fans can listen live to the audio on MSBN.
