Millersville, Pa. – Coming off of a win over a higher-ranked No. 6 C.W. Post team on Tuesday, the No. 9 Millersville women's field hockey team looked to repeat the feat Friday. The Marauders left Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium with their second straight home win over a higher ranked opponent than them by defeating No. 5 Indiana University of Pennsylvania 3-2.
Behind the efforts of Rachel Dickinson and Sarah Dickinson, Millersville got its sixth win of the year and fourth against a PSAC West opponent. Rachel scored what proved to be the winning goal with nine minutes left and her sister Sarah stopped two of the four shots the Crimson Hawks mustered on goal to send the Hawks to 7-3 on the season.
Rachel scored her third goal of the season, a high total for a freshman. That third goal is even more impressive because she leads the team in goals despite playing a defensive position. She also had an assist on a deflection off of Sarah Bomberger's stick that gave Millersville a 1-0 lead early in the first half.
That half seemed to belong to the Marauders. They spent the majority of the 35 minutes on IUP's end of the field, generating a total of 12 shots (four on goal) while the Hawks only managed two shots (one on goal) in the first half.
The second half of the game was even as it saw both teams put up five shots each (three each on goal), and score two goals apiece. Indiana finally broke through and opened the second half scoring six minutes in when Anouk Sickman connected off of a pass on a penalty corner taken by Jillian Duld. Millersville responded with a goal of its own three minutes later, when Samantha Ruane found the back of the net on a feed by Paige Morrison. Morrison's assist was her third of the year, temporarily giving her a team high in that category.
Then, with nine minutes to go, Brittany Anderson tied Morrison for the team lead in assists by finding Rachel Dickinson. IUP scored two minutes later to make it a 3-2 game, but their comeback fell short when the clock hit all zeroes.
On the other end of the field, it was the sixth time in eight starts this season that Sarah Dickinson has allowed two or fewer goals. Her two stops gave her 45 total this season and her save percentage now stands at .763.
Things don't get any easier on the Marauders schedule. After playing the second of back-to-back games tomorrow at home against Seton Hill at 4 p.m., Millersville will play three straight ranked opponents within a five day stretch from Oct. 11-16. The team goes to Kutztown to play the seventh-ranked Golden Bears, takes on No. 1 ranked Bloomsburg at home and finishes out the stretch against the second-ranked West Chester Rams on the road.
