Box Score

Waltham, Mass. – A matchup of two top 10teams lived up to it's billing. No. 9 Millersville took No. 10 Bentley to strokes to decide the game. The Marauders scored 2-of-3 and freshman Lauren Sotzin made four saves to give Millersville the 2-1 victory.

For the first time in four years the Marauders were without their senior goalkeeper Sarah Dickinson. Dickinson had started 55 of the last 56 games she appeared in since coming to Millersville. With Dickinson out, true freshman Lauren Sotzin got the opportunity to lead the team. That is exactly what she did.

Sotzin faced an aggressive Bentley team that slapped 17 shots through four periods. She saved nine and allowed just one goal. Sotzin continued to stay strong during the stroke-off, stopping all four Falcon attempts to secure her first collegiate win and start Millersville's season 1-0.

After a scoreless first half that had a combined three shots, Bentley picked up the offensive attack in the second. The Falcons, with seven shots in the second half, opened up the scoring in the 47th minute. Stephanie Sideris took a pass off a corner, faked the defender, and scooped the ball into the goal to lead, 1-0.

The Marauders responded minutes later when two newcomers connected to tie the game. Freshman Katelyn Zapp deflected a shot from freshman Randi Boyd into an empty net with 19 minutes to play in regulation.

The teams ended regulation with a tie and continued to battle through two scoreless overtimes. Millersville's Sotzin recorded five of her nine saves in the overtime periods.

Bentley started off the strokes with a miss to give the Marauders a chance to get an advantage. Samantha Ruane did just that as she put the first attempt passed Julie Powell to take a 1-0 lead in strokes.

The Falcons missed their second and third attempts, and Millersville missed its second. Another freshman was presented an opportunity to help the Marauders' cause. Alicia Youtz extended Millersville's stroke advantage to two after scoring on her attempt. Sotzin stopped Bentley's fourth and final attempt, giving Youtz the game-winner.

Bentley outshot the Marauders in both regulation and in extra time, totaling a combined margin of 17-4.

Millersville stays in Massachusetts for another game tomorrow when they take on the reigning national champion and preseason No. 1 River Hawks of UMass Lowell. The game is slated for a 3:30 p.m. start.
